Does the change in season affect you?

As a writer, like clockwork, when autumn is upon us, I enter this mania where I produce more work over about a six week period than I do all year. This started for me, two days ago, on the 23rd. I felt it all day on the 22nd, this need to write, then the next morning it just exploded.

It started with poetry. Over the past two days, I've written 14 poems, including three reversed etherees, and trilogy of Noveotto that can be read separate or together, each telling a part of a story.

I then finished a short story, I'd started earlier.

This evening, I helped a friend with a law class, writing six opinions on cases with precedent support.

I'm literally on fire, as I am every year at this time.

Does anyone else experience this?

Yes... yes it does. Come Autumn and then Winter, I end up becoming a little more morose or depressed. I guess I eat more to cheer myself up, lol.

This.

Every seasonal change, I get down.

Usually, I get:

Difficulty sleeping, waking up in the night
Feeling of uselessness
Moping around
Stressed and irritable
Headaches all day
Bad dreams
Sneezing, itchy eyes
Finding things boring I used to enjoy
Occasionally, thoughts about dying

Probably no wonder my brother thinks I'm depressed.

It sounds like you've got SAD.

Yeah, most likely.

I've not been to the doctor about it though. I've heard there are treatments for it, but it seems to involve just lights and stuff.

There is, but in the meantime, meditation can help. So can thought. I know, it is hard not to be cynical and stoic, and that sometimes, we just get out of bed that way.

Remember what Buddha said, "Mind your thoughts, for they become your words. Words become deeds. Deeds become you."

Try and keep yourself in a positive frame of mind.

True. Been a while since I meditated.
I can't seem to concentrate at the moment to do it. It's quite unusual considering I've never had any problems before until recently.

Agreed. Seasonal Affective Disorder. It is a type of bipolar disorder. It is easily treated.

It's a brain chemistry imbalance thought to be triggered by the change in the wave length of the light from the sun during the early fall. The farther away from the equator one lives, the greater the population of SAD victims.

I was diagnosed with bipolar type 1 some 37 years ago, and I am highly functional (until I get on RF):p

Your problem can be easily treated by your family doctor. The new medications are highly effective and have few side effects. It's chemical imbalance, and it's not your fault.

You may get lots done, but remember you don't have a parachute.

I'm just getting into the season. I'm Canadian, so when winter rolls around it just feels right.
I guess it's because I feel more introspective when I'm closed inside by the weather but I do my best writing during the winter. Solitary confinement is the best muse I've ever known.
Autumn is my favorite time of year and when it hits, the creative juices really start flowing.
When spring gets here, I can't think about anything but the weather and my creativity is replaced by the desire to get outside and do something physical.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Living in Texas, I don't have to deal with much ice and snow. If there's a time of year when it's difficult to get outside, it's actually summertime, when temps can get above 100 F for weeks on end. I feel constrained during those weeks - and I'm always thrilled when cooler air moves in.

I love October thru December - what a fantastic time of year! There's nothing bluer than an October sky in Texas. We can pull out our sweaters and corderoy pants - heck, we may even be able to wear hats and gloves and coats to a high school football game!

This time of year makes me want to cook and bake and feather my nest. I usually change out accessories at home - different pillows, afghans, comforters, and mantle decorations. I put mums out on the front porch, and hang a big autumn wreath on the front door.

My dogs seem happier outside too!

Great time of year - probably my favorite, though I also really love gray, rainy January as well - probably because cold, rainy weather is so rare here that it seems like a treat. That's the time of year that my creative writing skills blossom.

It affects me a little, but for me, it is the opposite of others. I don't like very hot weather, I prefer cooler weather (except when swimming, of course). I am happier in Autumn.

Not really. This time of year marks the beginning of things that I dislike, like the insane demands of the Christmas holidays and all the trappings of cold weather and the dead feel that winter seems to give off.

I HATE the damp and gloom of winter and it messes with my depression.

Autumn is beautiful and I surely find inspiration in it and the people that I love always inspire me and touch my heart but I feel far less productive during cooler months.

There's something about Spring and Summer that energizes me.

The rhythms of the planet affect us all regardless of whether or not we think they do. :D

As a Neopagan, I am to be more mindful of that connection. If you farm or garden, you become especially mindful of it, and also if you shop at local farmer's markets. It is a very recent thing for us to get blueberries or lettuce all year round. I cannot help but think that as the age of fossil fuels wanes - if we do not find an alternative - we will loose this privilege. Then we will all be more aware again of the seasonality of things. There will be no blueberries in winter again.

During spring I get depressed at the rain. In summer I am exhausted in the heat and rejoice in the storms. Now in autumn is my time. Dry, cool, crisp winds and changing leaves. The only things I like in winter is the look of snowfall in street light and the look of ice-coated trees.

Same but worse ... a bit further north.

At first I thought, nope, not affected by seasonal changes at all, but then I realized that every autumn I am imbued with a constructive energy to get things done. It could be because the school year starts in the fall. Most of us have been structured by that routine of childhood.

In the spring I do feel the energy to get out in the garden, too, and it is a different energy from the autumn one.

Maybe if I examined it more closely I'd find that I have different outlook more often than I think. The only time of year I'm susceptible to sadness or melancholy is around the winter solstice, attributed not to the Christmas holiday but to the shortness of days, I think.

Thanks for an interesting question!
