Racism & Slavery

Where does racism come from?
Why Africans in particular were (and are) victims of racism?
Why most slaves came from Africa?

Oh please not a thread about Africans being the most persecuted. Please. Everyone has undergone persecution at some point, you want to bring up one group, what about the Native Americans? They had their land and heritage taken away, and they were put on reservations.

Sorry, I was not aware that this topic has been discussed that often on this board. :run:

Racisum is a value system that comes from prejudgeing. Exactly the word describes the course of action = PRE-Judge. We all do this to some degree. some more than most. When you enter a room , you assess it & without any real hard facts draw a conclusion if the room is safe to take your hair down & enjoy the people in it or to be uncomfortable.
In all respects it can become unfair to find yourself locked in a perception that does not allow for the truths in front of you to be considered.

Africans are not the only 1's that are victums. History leaves no one out of that catagory. Try finding 1 group of people who do not have a story to tell in that perspective. If you do-I would like to know!

Most Slaves is not likely acurate. but, it is in the tellings of a practice which unfortunately came from africa itself. it was tribal & culteral. Not like the business it became in america & other countries. It is answers to a sorrowful subject matter & for some a shame they wish to see laid to rest. Racism is something I hope to be a memory in my life time!

Racial slavery did not come around until the U.S. colonies. Slavery has existed throughout history, and was never a racial thing until we in the U.S. got slaves from Africa (from the Portuguese.) When an Empire conquered another place, they took those they did not kill and made them slaves. In some areas, the slaves were eventually released and integrated into society. But, for some reason the U.S. couldn't grasp that fact. Since there were cheap slaves in Africa, we got them all from there. Then it developed into a racial thing.

I don't understand your position on this. This is the first thread I've ever seen about African slavery and I've been here over a year.
The way you're reacting one would think these type of threads pop up every week.

In Arabia, there were Turkish slaves, blue eyed slaves, Omani (Arab) slaves, and African slaves. It wasn't really always connected to race. However this seems to be in the back of the mind of most people given the history of the US, and its strong presence in the world.

Also, slavery had a different connotation. When you say "slavery" people don't think "whips and chains" and people picking cotton. Abuse certainly existed I'm sure, however, many were considered like family. When slaves were freed, they stayed with their owners/family, and some have relations with them til this day, whether black or not.

Well said.

I suspect that as slavery became less and less acceptable, race became more and more important as a way to justify its continuance.

Did not the Arabs castrate their male slaves?
The Turkish did, they wanted eunuchs to guard the women in harem.

Well you responded yourself! What´s else to say! :D

that's like a man complaining that a woman has prejudices based on having been mistreated, and on knowing about millenia of patriarchy -- it's whiny, and hardly an example of "it all being equal", as if it's just random. white males as a group never endured what they put others through as a group, period. complaining about this thread, or trying to make all oh so relative, is pointless. the question in the OP are valid, and they don't even imply "only blacks" suffered from racism. so wtf is up with all that.

Musarium: Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America

^ "photographs and POSTCARDS of lynchings in america".

nobody ever did to white people what white people did and do to non-whites as groups. (I'll repeat that until it gets refuted, which I doubt it will)

now, don't get me wrong -- I don't hate myself for what other people did or do. I don't condone prejudice against whites, I find the whole racism stuff bull to begin with, there are no races. but I sure as **** won't wear this pale *** hide and ignore history. no sirree bob. and I won't sit here while others play it down, or instantly moan about "the subject even being brought up". it's still a valid subject, even today, which is a crying ******* shame.

If he was to mix with the women or guard them.. then yes. Others would get married and have kids. So castration existed for sure. Im not sure how common, but it was common enough that it wouldnt sound strange to people at the time.

On the other hand some families essentially adopting their slaves (without giving them the last name) was common too. But til this day, origins are always considered among people from tribes when they get married.

Im sure the details were different each half a century or so. Like I said earlier theres people today who live with or supported by their former owners. If they arent that close, then they'd visit them every year or so. Others - of course- are completely disconnected from the past.

To put it simply, they were similar to servants or maids that were bought and sold. Mistreatment although in existence for sure given the circumstances, was not encouraged. Actually, those who traded slaves (brought them in, marketed them etc) , weren't viewed with respect. Some families/tribes wouldnt allow any of their own to have such a "job". Religious families were encouraged to free their slaves or limit their number.

Even if a slave (or former slave) was considered of a "not so honorable heritage", it was never used as a reason to kill them, even among the ones who saw them as inferior.

The scene in the US and its racial connotations, including hatred of blacks even after they were freed, killing them sometimes just because of skin color... all this just created a mental image (whips, chains, picking cotton etc) among many that assumed this is what slavery was like, all the time, and everywhere. And usually people are too busy remembering how bad it was (understandably so) to look into details of practices in different cultures at different times.

I wonder what what practices surrounded slavery in India and Japan?
