I've seen a documentary about the ark being in some wooden box in the US... forgot the name though.
You are so awesome.
is the 3rd temple ever going to happen? i think the ark of the covenant has to be found first. this should be a thread by itself. possible locations: Under the temple mount, ethopia, england. maybe i should have said the 4th temple because there was a temple built in Elephantine Island Egypt and Tel Arad in Israel. Any comments would be appreciated
It will be the Third Temple. The shrines at Elephantine, and at Tel Arad, and Bet El, and at other places in Northern Israel were all unauthorized shrines, where YHVH was worshipped alongside other gods, and the priesthood was not properly made up of Levites. We do not count them as sacred Temples.
Most Jews who believe in a more or less literal messianism (which is probably only around half the Jewish People, if not even less) do believe that a Third Temple will be built when the messiah comes. But it is unclear whether the lost items from the Second Temple will be rediscovered, or whether new items will be made for the Third Temple (most of the items from the First Temple were not recovered, and new ones had to be made). The original ark of the covenant, it should be noted, was lost during the First Temple period, and had to be replaced then. For the last couple of centuries it stood, the ark in the First Temple was empty; and so was the ark in the Second Temple.
Although there are a couple of places where locals are said to guard the lost ark of the covenant, I find it extremely unlikely that it should actually be in any of those spots. I think, unfortunately, it is truly lost, forever, unless by some miracle the messiah will know where to find it.
But in any case, I would imagine that the Temple will be built when the messiah comes, and the things to go in will come later, one way or the other. Regardless, what will speed the messiah's coming is not finding a lost object, no matter how holy, but the efforts of people to overcome baseless hatred, figure out how to live together in something approaching harmony, and remedy the injustices that plague our societies.
