"Strange - I looked at the atheist registry, and a LOT of atheists are named 'Haywood Jablomi'. Jablomi... what is that? Finnish?"

I have no desire to be personally contacted by proselytizers.

I'm completely open about my disbelief in the supernatural in my personal affairs, and I don't think I could stop someone who wanted to put my name on a public list, but I'm not going to volunteer myself as a target for harassment.

I don't want to be on a convenient list when the next crusade or inquisition starts up.

I'm with you on this. It's just asking for trouble.

All you need is some deranged bible belt schizophrenic who thinks god is talking to him to grab a high powered rifle and go hunting "dem ebil atheists" for it to turn into a really bad idea.

Yeah, I was thinking bigger though. Maybe some radical, fundamentalist religious group gaining control of a political party and trying to fix all of our problems by returning to our traditional roots. And by "returning to our roots" I mean puritan style torturing of anyone not part of their religion. Sadly, in the US, all the ingerdients for this are already in place. Let's hope for the best in the coming election.

The crazies already know where to find us. Many go to advertised meetings
& many are public figures. In spite of this, we don't seem to be victimized.
Most of'm seem angrier at each other than at us.

I know you're all not like that, and i guess watching the atheist experience, listening to non-prophets and reading pharyngula i get exposed to the most insane people your fine country has to offer.

But damn am i lucky i don't live in America. Sure we've got one guy in Canberra who is spewing the whole "natural disasters are because of the gays" but he's nothing compared to this guy, and harold camping, and ray comfort and ken ham (i know comfort and ham are from NZ and Australia but they had to go to America to get acceptance).

Remember that news stories & movies are always about what sells ads & tickets. That would be extreme events, either manufactured
or carefully culled from a world of the 99.9% ordinary & mundane. The US is much safer than dangerous Oz, where dingos eat babies.

Dunno about Pharyngula, but the Atheist Experience an the Non-Prophets are both produced by a not-for-profit group.

And the Atheist Experience is a call-in show whose content is driven by who calls in. The only screening they do is to get rid of obvious trolls; apart from that, their policy is that theist callers go o the front of the line ahead of the atheists. There's no "careful culling" going on. They spread a wide net and take whatever they catch.

That's one way of looking at it, but I would still be a little embarassed if my country's main cultural export was Ken Hamm. lol.

Granted, you also gave the world Julian Assange... Australia must be a strange and wondrous place.

I am a danger to kids. Honestly, we are just like pedophiles. We want to touch little children's minds, just like pedophiles want to touch their genitals. Exactly the same!

Yeah mate i know.

You don't know the half of it, as well as the dingos we've got MASSIVE crocodiles that eat babies as well.

We have 6 out of 10 of the most deadly snakes, we have some of the most deadly spiders.

You can't go swimming in the oceans because of the great white sharks, blue ringed octopi and exceptionally venomous jelly fish.

Even the exceptionally cute platypus (it's a weird cross between a beaver and a duck) is poisonous.

Kangaroos that can kick the **** out of you.

There are SO many ways to die in this country, but atleast we don't have a religious right who is trying to get creationism taught as science. (i know that's not all states, but even one state is too many)

We are the land of the free and i wouldn't live anywhere else.
