Pornography. What's wrong with it?

Before delving into the subject please keep in mind that I'm only addressing content, not how pornography is produced or who is involved in its production.

To help in understanding the subject here are a few remarks, both from Wikipedia, explaining what constitutes pornography, and how it differs from erotica and obscenity.

Pornography or porn is the portrayal of explicit sexual subject matter for the purposes of sexual arousal and erotic satisfaction.

Pornography may use any of a variety of media, ranging from books, magazines, postcards, photos, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, film, video, or video game. However, when sexual acts are performed for a live audience, by definition it is not pornography, as the term applies to the depiction of the act, rather than the act itself. Thus, portrayals such as sex shows and striptease are not classified as pornography.

A distinction is often made between erotica (the portrayal of sexuality with high-art aspirations, focusing also on feelings and emotions) and pornography (the depiction of acts in a sensational manner, with the entire focus on the physical act, so as to arouse quick intense reactions)

An obscenity is any statement or act which strongly offends the prevalent morality of the time, is a profanity, or is otherwise taboo, indecent, abhorrent, or disgusting, or is especially inauspicious. The term is also applied to an object that incorporates such a statement or displays such an act.

In a legal context, the term obscenity is most often used to describe expressions (words, images, actions) of an explicitly sexual nature. The word can be used to indicate a strong moral repugnance, in expressions such as "obscene profits", "the obscenity of war", etc. It is often replaced by the word salaciousness.

According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, that which is obscene (i.e.: an obscenity) is quite simply defined as repulsive, or disgusting to the senses.

The definition of what exactly constitutes an obscenity differs from culture to culture, between communities within a single culture, and also between individuals within those communities. Many cultures have produced laws to define what is considered to be obscene, and censorship is often used to try to suppress or control materials that are obscene under these definitions . . . .

So, what is wrong with pornography, or is there nothing wrong with it?

We commonly indulge ourselves in countless other things without objection, so why is an indulgence in flesh wrong? And while pornography may not promote the sanctity of life there is a multitude of things we do that don't promote it either, so why lay the onus on pornography?

You'd probably have a stupid expression on your face too if you had to get in ridiculous poses. Let's give the girls a break or two, K?

Get rid of the guys in the pix too.
Ah, so it's the "girl on girl" stuff that lights your fire. Gotcha.

It makes men expect too much, dang-it!!
"Dang-it"? Need I remind you that It is more blessed to give than to receive? So please think of us poor men who sacrifice ourselves just to give women such an opportunity.

Oh yeh, and the terrible, terrible acting.
That's what lends the whole thing an aura of honesty. Just as in real life even the incompetents are capable of scoring.

Nothing inherently. (Like anything else)

Depends on what it is being used for. Likely varies from individual to individual. But in general terms, when it is perceived to be an addiction or conceived of as gateway to objectifying people (particularly women), it moves into territory of being problematic.

I would just stress that I do not see anything inherently wrong with it, and feel it has many useful / good purposes, IMO.

Addiction re-inforces the erroneous fragmented view of reality, which is not fragmented. Further, any sensual addiction hands over control to to sensual functions and reduces freedom for the person. Senses should be under control of the person and not the other way around.

Of course the above is theoretical for me, since I am a slave of the senses.

Watching it has been a lonesome affair for about a year now. Porn should by legal decree zap into existence a partner.

Seems to me that Porn is nothing more than a scapegoat for weak willed individuals.

Much like when people start blaming the alcohol for their behavior/actions instead of accepting responsibility.

Why would the two be at odds? And why is indulging in carnal desire necessarily bad?

the purpose of sexual relations was for mankind to fulfill their God given mandate. The pleasure derived from sex was merely a side point...it wasnt what gave sex its meaning & value. Unfortunately, indulging in carnal pleasure makes one forget the true meaning of sex.

I'll give you a comparison. Food is vital for life. We need it to nourish our body and keep us healthy. A pleasant side point to food is that it tastes great. But the reality is that our bodies need the nutrients, not the flavors. If we were to merely extract the flavors from our food and only eat the flavors, then we would become very ill and eventually die.

The pleasure of sex is special, but its not its purpose.

If sex in humans is primary for procreation why did women evolve to have sex during times of the month when they are infertile? And why is it so hard to tell from appearances whether a woman is fertile or not?

In animals where sex is primarily for procreation, the females only have sex during fertile periods, and their fertility is marked by such things as a swollen red rump.

The next time you hear some fool say sex in humans is primarily for procreation, ask them when their rump last swelled up a nice bright red color.

Hi Pegg!

I thought your argument was interesting, and it raised a question in my mind. Is chocolate the food equivalent of porn? - i.e. it's eaten strictly for physical pleasure, not to preserve life. If so, and it's okay to have chocolate in moderation, can the porn watchers have porn in moderation? The reason I'm asking is I've always heard that lust and gluttony were both cardinal sins for Christians, but I don't ever really hear about gluttony. Is it more of a cultural than a religious issue maybe - being oversexed is more controversial than being overweight? Just asking, because the whole lust-gluttony thing has always confused me.

Peace and blessings,
Yeshe
