The 13th warrior

many of us saw "The 13th warrior" movie,it was about a muslim that was exiled to northern lands where he found pagan people, they fought together, prayed together, shared good times and bad times, through this movie,i guess it was made clear that we are all humans,we have families, wishes, needs, all of us go through good and bad times, all of us are only very poor babies that are trying to make our own ways through this hard life, but many of us were victims of greed, arrogance, personal desires of many of our leaders on both sides of all religions, many examples of that can be found throughout history

i'm not going to tell you like Antonio told you on that movie:"There's only one God and bla bla bla"

There's only one God and i'm his messenger,i'm not Moses or Jesus or Muhammad or something,i'm just an ordinary messenger and there are copies and clones of me in every land,i mean i finally came to understand the message of Muhammad(p.p.b.u.h):
"I (Allah) only sent you as a mercy for the worlds"

i respect everyone's belief and i'm not trying to convert anyone and i hope the message was conveyed

peace and blessings

I'm not sure that it was, but I must say, I thought the movie was a really cool portrait of the heathen religion (not entirely accurate, but positive). I also thought the respect and honor that passed between the muslim and the asatruar was admirable and an example of how we should all get along.

I loved the movie. Bought it on DVD I liked it so much. And Mujahid I wish there were more people like you in all religions. Glad to see you are a person who is fervent in his beleifs but does not feel the need to force that beleif on others.

Sadly there are many in various religions, and yours in particular who seek to force their views on others, violently if need be. That is terrible and I would love to see it stopped, but until people start seeing that we all have a lot more in common than not, as the folks from divergent cultures came to realize in the 13th Warrior, then I fear my hope for peace amongst the various cultures of the world is a far off dream.

i think it will never be like that,in islamic belief B.(is this the first letter of your first name?)Allah is the sole owner of this life with all that it has of suffering and pain, but if someone gets to know that his majesty is the most merciful,he'll come to understand that it's US who are the reason for all the pain,we have to look to ourselves first if we want to be safe from the pain

May you be blessed!

Mujahid,

Yes, B is the first letter of my real name. Do you know how to say "may you be blessed" or "peace be with you" in Arabic? I intended to sign off with one of those phrases in Arabic but forgot how to type them.

Jewscout,

I would agree with you that there are some Beawulf influences in 13th Warrior. I found it interesting and inspiring to see and hear the Norse mentality toward life and death. "You may go and hide in a hole if you like, it will not change the hour of your death" or something to that effect.

What a liberating mentality for the warrior to take!!! My life has already been written out, I will live and die according to this plan, so there is no stress. No reason for me to be a coward and hide from the enemy. When my time is up, it is up, regardless of whether I am cowering in a hole or gloriously swinging a battle axe into the flesh of my enemies.

Ah how I wish Constantine had decided on Norse Mythology over Christianity. What a wild and wooly world we would live in today. Norse thinking I can get in to. Turn the other cheek doesn't do much for me.

Assalamu alaykom means: peace be upon you,i don't know who's Beawulf, could you please give us some information on him?

Mujahid,

I knew how to say assalamu alaykum, but had no clue how to spell it. Thanks. And Beawulf is one of the very first stories written in English. Very ancient story from the Norse lands about a monster and a hero who defeats the monster. Very difficult to read because of the archaic form of English the story is written in, but a very interesting read nonetheless.

Might want to google Beawulf and Beawolf to get the actual text.

It's a Mandatory, definitely.

Prerequisites for a Mandatory Movie:

It's 2 am. You've got a job interview at 8 am. You're nervous and can't sleep so you get that last drink of water or smoke that last cigarette before making one last run through the channels. You suddenly come upon a movie that you simply HAVE to watch, knowing full well that you'll regret getting 2 hours of sleep come interview time.

Oh, yeah, it was bad. But it was the good kind of bad, the 'B' grade movie bad that turns into a cult classic!

Yep, I've seen the movie too. I actually saw the 1st time at the cinema. Also have the DVD.

And yes, it is based loosely on Beowulf, JewScout.

The character, played by Bandera, has the name of historical person, Ahmed ibn Fadlan. The real Ahmed was a historian, who did meet Vikings, living in Russia, where they were known as Rus, and he did witness a Viking ship burial during his visit, like the one seen in the movie. The rest of the movie is fictional, and the real Ahmed did not meet any Beowulf-type person.
