I say yes, Muhammad was peaceful for the most part. His society was pretty brutal and barbaric, and that influenced him to a certain level, but he tried to be moderate as he could. He never killed unless he absolutely felt he had to.

For him, peace was not always an option. The Meccan pagans and the Jewish Arab tribes clashed with him, and in those cases, he had to fight back to protect the faith. However, I would not call him bloodthirsty, rather he was a political realist, arguably a good one at that.

Yes I wouldn't call him bloodthirsty either. There were times he was very peaceful, and the sayings of his in some hadith are very good and wise.

I'd say compared with many people in his time he was quite moderate. The Arab world prior to Islam was very brutal. The majority of Arabs were nomads and they only cared about their own tribe, and would kill any others. Christians built a lot of the cities in Arabia as outposts of protection from the nomads.

Compared with most other prophets and saints, he was not very peaceful. It's hard for me to think of him as a peaceful person or even pious or saintly.

I think he is peaceful, but there could be some issues in his society during his time that might made him do things that he rather not or he didn't really want to do.

Hello every body,
According to the following two points I vote that Muhammad is a peaceful man if He's not the peace itself.

First of all, Allah sent many messengers in the course of the history
accordingly to teach people and guide them to the right path and this
is one of Allah's mercies Allah said in the Quran:

[016:036] And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allâh (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Tâghût (all false deities, i.e. do not worship anything besides Allâh)." Then of them were some whom Allâh guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).

also in other Chapter (Sura) :

[018:056] And We send not the Messengers except as givers of glad tidings and warners. But those who disbelieve, dispute with false argument in order to refute the truth thereby. And they treat My Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), and that with which they are warned, as a jest and mockery!

The second point we should all realize that Muhammad (peace be upon him and upon all the other messengers) was sent by
Allah (the God) to all Mankind as the last of the Prophets, and to complete
Allah's message - and this the second mersy of Allah in Quran we read :

[033:040] Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam] is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allâh and the last (end) of the Prophets. And Allâh is Ever All-Knower of everything.

[035:024] Verily, We have sent you with the truth, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. And there never was a nation but a warner had passed among them.

And Muhammad Himself is considered a Mercy of Allah to all Mankind :

[021:107] And We have sent you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) not but as a mercy for the 'آlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

[034:028] And We have not sent you (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) except as a giver of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind, but most of men know not.

[009:128] Verily, there has come to you a Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) from amongst yourselves (i.e. whom you know well). It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) is anxious over you (to be rightly guided, to repent to Allâh, and beg Him to pardon and forgive your sins in order that you may enter Paradise and be saved from the punishment of the Hell-fire); for the believers (he is) full of pity, kind, and merciful.
[009:129] But if they turn away, say (O Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]): "Allâh is sufficient for me. Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) in Him I put my trust and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne."

[004:170] O mankind! Verily, there has come to you the Messenger (Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam]) with the truth from your Lord. So believe in him, it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then certainly to Allâh belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. And Allâh is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.

The above facts led many historians to say something like the following:

Muhammad, the inspired man who founded Islam, was born
about AD. 570 into an Arabian tube that worshipped idols.
Orphaned at birth, he was always particularly solicitous of the
poor and needy the widow and the orphan, the slave and the
downtrodden. At twenty he was already a successful
businessman, and soon became director of camel caravans for a
wealthy widow. When he reached twenty-five his employer,
recognizing his meet, proposed marriage. Even though she was
fifteen years older, he married her, and as long as she lived
remained a devoted husband. Like almost every major prophet
before him, Muhammad fought shy of serving as the
transmitter of God's word, sensing his own inadequacy But the
angel commanded Read'. So far as we know, Muhammad was
unable to read or write, but he began to dictate those inspired
words which would soon revolutionize a large segment of the
earth: "There is one God." In all things Muhammad was
profoundly practical. When his beloved son Ibrahim died, an
eclipse occurred, and rumors of God's personal condolence
quickly arose. Whereupon Muhammad is said to have
announced,' An eclipse is a phenomenon of nature. It is foolish
to attribute such things to the death or birth of a humanbeing."
At Muhammads own death an attempt was made to
deify him, but the man who was to become his administrative
successor killed the hysteria with one of the noblest speeches
in religious history: 'If there are any among you who
worshipped Muhammad, he is dead. But if it is God you
worshipped, He lives for ever'.

Well if you consider the amount of invasions that Muhammed and Islam have carried out and of course there was the sacking and taking of slaves aswell you would be hard pressed to make a case that he was peaceful.

There is one choice you are forgetting.

Muhammed was a peaceful man, however his concept of peaceful was entirely influenced by his societies concepts of peaceful.

Yes,basically he was as peaceful as any other leader of those times although his legacy lives on in Islams invasion of Kashmir

I think although he was probably not a great military leader himself he did influence many other successive military leaders in much the same way Christianity influenced Constantine who is said to have held up a Christian symbol and said “with this sign I shall conquer”. Saladin is the most outstanding example of an Islamic military leader that defeated the Christians during the Crusades. Saladin was like Islam's version of Constantine.

Surely , Mohammad Salalahualiwasalm was one of the most peaceful men on earth, He never hert any body for the sake of his own , even if a person do such bad act that cannot be forgivne in our eyes, Prophet Muhammad Salalahualiwasalm never ever punish them and show a behaviour of peace with him

But surely he is strick to person who is damaging society by killing people and destorying their house, and througing them away from their houses and families.

Quran says in Surah 60 , Verses

8. Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly andjustly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

9. Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) indriving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). Itis such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.

killling innocent being (irrespective of muslim or non muslim) is one of the biggest sin in Islam. killing one innocent is just like you killed whole of humanity.

All the battles fought at that time are for defensive purpose , tell me what you do if somebody try to kill you , or through you out of your house and your family, you will surely fight with them.

If you see the history , people of Mecca tortured muslims to so extend that they have to migrate , even migratin does not cool those people and they try to destory them , so Allah has ordered to fight with those people

Quran says in Surah 5 verse 32

"On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreadingmischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and ifany one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the wholepeople. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in theland.

Hopefully , these verses of the Quran clarifies you to whom we should fight and whom we cannot. and dont pay attention to those people who just quotes thing out of context and some time wrong text and try to say that Islam allow to kill non muslim. Islam does not allow to kill innocent peropler whether muslim or non muslim , and treat them well and good.

So why are muslims so busy killing both muslims and non-muslims these days?
