Looking for a place to call home

For starters I should tell you a bit about myself. I was raised in a Southern Baptist home in the Deep South. Most friends and family are still Southern Baptists or Independent Baptists. I still live in a small town in the Deep South, so my options for a congregation are pretty slim; however, I’d like to find a place that I can call home.

I do believe that there is Truth, and that it can be found. However, I don’t believe others can bestow the truth on you. I think you have to find it through an inner journey.

Maybe it’s a holdover from my early years or the influence of my environment but I do feel a strong bond with Christianity. However, I have a few objections.

1. Too much emphasis is placed on material things: big nice buildings that are used 2 days a week. It’s a waste.

2. I don’t think you need a highly paid pastor or music director to find salvation.

3. Too little service to the needy in today’s churches. I believe Christianity should be a service oriented religion; Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, nurse the sick, you get the picture.

4. Too much emphasis placed on State controls, seems the Church likes to try to get laws passed that promote their goals (prohibition, laws against gambling, even social justice laws)

5. Too much State worship in church. Flags and military appreciation days and the like.

OK that’s about it for now, maybe a good starting point.

Have you tried the Belief-O-Matic quiz? Would you be open to telling what your religious views on certain subjects such as your belief in the afterlife, God, and so on?

Best of luck in your journey, from an ex-seeker. :)

I really don’t like the quiz though, because of statements like, “the earth was created by God in 7 days less than 10,000 years ago” I agree with part of that statement but not all of it. But, yes, I took the quiz and the top choice was Conservative Quaker, I do hold to a good bit of their beliefs but there are some exceptions. I did come across the Seekers, a forerunner of the Quakers that I agreed more with them. I looked at the Salvation Army and again found some disagreement with them. I’m sure there’s not a 100% match to anything for anybody.

About my beliefs:

I believe in God, the God of the Bible and Jesus and I accept the Trinity. So that puts me in mainstream Christianity.

I reject, as unnecessary all ritual, priests and formal ceremony. So that puts me in the Protestant camp.

So the real question is what Protestant Christian Denomination fits me best. Maybe y’all could give me a quiz on this forum to help me think about my positions on various issues, I’m sure I have an opinion but I’m not sure of the issues. J

I was raised Christian and saw some very strange things among the clergy that pretty much took away my belief in Christianity.

I searched and searched for many years and then I found this book about self-cultivation called Zhuan Falun. It is an amazing book and holds the truth of human life I believe. It aims at Body-Mind-Soul cultivation and its benefits for health, serenity and wisdom is just amazing I find.

The cultivation method is called Falun Dafa and has spread to more than 100 countries in less than 20 years with about 100 million practitioners.

Read Zhuan Falun here:
