Masturbation

Why do some people think it is wrong?

In my opinion children should be taught to pleasure themselves rather than have sex with others before they are emotionally ready for it.

Why do some people think it is wrong?
Because they're deeply dysfunctional when it comes to all things sexual.

"Taught?" For one thing, it's unnecessary - they kinda figure it out on their own. More importantly, how would you distinguish between instruction and molestation?

Why do some people think it is wrong?
Usually because of sexual inadequacy.

They should certainly be taught about it, but maybe teaching them to actually do it is going a bit far. They normally have no problems figuring it out for themselves.

Is this supposed to be a religious debate?

religious debates? ah, what is religion for? just to make up rules in regards to what...life perhaps...masturbation is a part of life...like it or not

oh yeah that's right... you're living for the afterlife... so you're already dead

Please keep liberals away from my kids Lord.

ha ha
the idea masturbation as a vice is a ridiculous notion... and it came from the religious right...
why do you think your 13 yr old spends a lot of time in the bathroom

denial, denial ...a typical religious pious trait

On a related note, I so want this t-shirt:

.... If only to reward the advertiser who came up with the blurb:
One thing everyone seems to agree is quite important to Jesus is that kids not have sex. That’s judged to be so important, in fact, that in many parts of America, high-school students aren’t even taught how sex works; their sex education ends with the deadly serious admonition that they not do it until they get married (whereupon it will surely be just…awesome.)

Abstinence-only education leads to one thing, people. No, not to a generation of students so misinformed about sex that the rates of teen pregnancy skyrocket — just ignore all those studies, pinko! No — it leads to happy, healthy, well-adjusted virgins who don’t understand how their hoo-hoos and pee-pees work, but who love the Lord.

I was able to learn it without any help at all.

Why do some people think it is wrong?

For some reason natural human behavior is seen as unnatural to them. A warped and potentially damaging perspective itself IMO.

Right. It provides a safe, natural, and normal release rather than artificially penting such things up and having it "explode" in recklessness abandon and experimentation with god knows who or what.

I think having a proper understanding and control of the body is essential for health and stability rather than just being told such things are taboo, filthy, and wrong and leaving it at that. Fewer problems tend to arise IMO if children know what its all about, and consequently have a tendency to be more stable and productive for it.

That's a strange opinion. Alright class today I'll teach you how to touch yourself
That idea just won't work in society today. I'm all for sex education, but teaching them masturbation is crossing the line and plus they'll learn that stuff for themselves when their hormones start pumping.

Well, I was being facetious in my earlier post. I'm pretty sure Misty knows most kids manage to figure out how to masturbate. Just try to stop them from figuring it out.

I'm sure what she meant was that we should suggest that it's a better outlet for their sexual urges than having sex with other people -- at least till they're a bit more mature.

I take the term "childern" here is referring to those who are already experiencing the flow of hormones. Smoke is right as everyone else in that its something that can be figured out easily enough on ones own. -NM-

I am not sure why people think that it is a sin. They have a story in the OT (can't remember where) about some man who was supposed to have a baby for his brother through his brother's wife (now his wife) but he spilled the semen instead. I don't think that story prohibits, masturbation, however. But some people take it as such. That is all I can think of.

I'm curious about that as well. I can't think of anything in the Bible that really forbids masturbation. I would actually be curious as to whether or not the idea of masturbation being wrong is even religious in origin.

From what I gathered, it wasn't necessarily a religious thing to forbid masturbation. Masturbation was tied into health problems, and thus was seen as wrong. The medical association was one of the leaders in condemning masturbation as it was believed that it was a health risk that could lead to several afflictions, including the well-known ones such as going blind and hairy palms. This was in a time that modern science and medicine were not at a level that they were today. So it was logical for them to make masturbation a taboo. Various religions picked up on this and were vocal about it.

Today though, the idea that it is a sin or should be forbidden is really dying. The medical association no longer holds that idea, and many churches are leaning away from it as well.

I was brought up as a fundamental baptist. The only time I ever heard sex mentioned was in a negative way. Homosexuality was consistently preached against, as was sex before marriage, oral sex, pornogrophy, and masturbation. As a result, when I actually had sex for the first time, I was freaked out and the experience was not that great. I eventually was able to get over my uncomfortability with sex, but the point is religions like mine need to be more accepting of sex. It is natural and I don't understand the negative stigma they feel required to place on it
