BARCELONA (AFP) – Catalonia's parliament on Wednesday voted to ban bullfighting from January 1, 2012, becoming the first region in mainland Spain to outlaw the centuries-old tradition.
Cheers broke out in the assembly as the ban was approved by 68 votes in favour to 55 against and nine abstentions, while supporters and opponents of the ban both held noisy rallies outside.

That is good to hear, though I don't see bullfighting being banned from all of Spain any time soon.

Making progress :) I hope bull fighting is eliminated from the world eventually. It is no better than dog fights or **** fights.

I'm up for allowing bullfighting, as long as the bulls aren't drugged, and it's hand-to-hand, or hand-to-hoof as it may be.

Done here.
I think bullfighting should be allowed as long as they don't wear the bull down with torture first, and as long as the matador fights unarmed. That would be impressive.

Personally, I think it would be more interesting if the bull's were given flak jackets and flamethrowers.

That is great news!!!
Anyone else catch the Colbert Report when he showed a clip of a bullfighter that got gored through his mandible and the horn came out of his mouth? It looked pretty painful. Not as painful as being stabbed numerous times until you finally die though.

Ole!!

I don't know why anyone would call bullfighting a sport. Reminds me of the spanish inquisition, men using instruments of torture on defenseless victims. Guess these men think they're really brave for their sadism.

I've read that this is as much about Catalan independence as about bulls.
It's a good thing.
If I remember correctly, I think they've been trying to secede for years. When I was studying abroad in Spain, we took a trip to Bilbao, and some of the group got really, REALLY wasted, and they started singing, "Yo soy español! Español! Español!" One of the locals actually came up to us and said that we should be careful, 'cause around that, if you show Spanish pride, you could get shot/stabbed.

So I think being the first to ban such a major (although brutal and inhumane) cultural tradition might help them in their cause to secede.
