Same here in Brazil. Sometimes the religious cerimony doubles as a civil one, but it is still the civil marriage that gives one legal rights.

Thanks Smoke and LuisDantas!

I had wondered. So the law is similar to that in the US -- civil marriage license = married often accompanied by religious ceremony.

Any word on how the Argentine debate is going, and what the anticipated outcome is? From what I read yesterday it seemed like the Senate vote was (at the time) too close to call.

The Senate approved same-sex marriage by a vote of 33 to 27, with 3 abstaining, a few minutes after 4 o'clock this morning.

Well, he will be or is being disciplined and so I will leave this up to Rome and/or his bishop to deal with. That said, I do hope he comes back and reconciles with the Catholic Church.

Hooray! One for the side of equality! Not quite as strong a showing as in Iceland, but still yay!

Good Lord, I hope everyone has run out of steam here!

As a religious person who has changed his mind about homosexuality, I would like to interject some sanity to this debate.

I am for freedom! Freedom for homosexuals to get married, not be discriminated against, and most of all be able enjoy the financial advantages of marital bliss.

That said, I see no difference between a heterosexual and a homosexual being a priest.

Neither is allowed to have sex!

What I do not agree with, (although I understand completely) is folks trying to tell other folks what they should believe.

Freedom of religion means all religions. Churches have every right to make their own policies and the people who rail against them are religious bigots. Yes, the door swings both ways. If you have an erection over what other people believe, you are just as bad as the people you rail against.

I'm a little more philosophical about gay issues anymore. It's not my job to judge them and I am sick and tired of debating religious texts trying to defend or condem homosexuals. It is just plain wrong on both sides.

Lets live and let live! Lets pass legislation giving homosexuals equal rights, but in the same breath, where is the tolerance for other folks beliefs as well?

If a church wants to have policies or beliefs, it is well within their rights too.

Homophobia or religion bashing is ignorant. Both are bigots in my book.

I do however sympathise with homosexual contempt for religion, I just don't condone it.

I'm trying to be a good American and a religious person. I should not have to choose between the two.

The Roman Catholic Church has every right to do as they wish and people can decide if they want to join or not!

I disagree. It's not bigotry to point out institutional bigotry, and as long as we don't try, for example, to force a church to bless same-sex marriages, it's not intolerant to dispute their beliefs.

When you and I dispute about politics, that's not bigotry on either side. Neither is disputing about religion.

I hold that the Catholic Church should change its teachings. I don't hold that the Catholic Church should be forced to change its teachings. There's a very significant difference.

Point taken.

However religion is an ancient thing. Expecting it to be hip will most likely be a disappointment.

The biggest reason I have changed my mind about homosexuality is, what one person thinks about something should not control another persons happiness. That is so wrong on so many levels.

I was invited to attend a church service a couple of months ago. The preacher was gay bashing. He said,"The Bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve".

I was so offended, I stood up and walked out of that church never to return again.

That is not the Christianity I was taught to believe as a young person, where is the love for one another?

If he accepts the dogma of the Church
on gay marriage then how could he possibly
support it politically? After all, he would be
supporting something he considers immoral,
unnatural and abberant.
You cannot have it both ways.

That is what often happens with those people and organizations that we love and care about, isn't it? We support them and do whatever we can to help them overcome their most serious mistakes.

So he can hope for change in the RCC and still be loyal to it.

You cannot have it both ways.
Depends on what we are talking about exactly.

I believe that the Church will never
change its teaching concerning this matter.
Why? Because the Church's opposition is immbedded in the
moral and natural laws. These are unchangeable.

Except that it is not. Please notice that much the same arguments were once used to justify slavery. That changed. Homophoby will unavoidably follow the same path, only faster (since there aren't even economic reasons to protect it, much unlike slavery).

The pope has announced this week that women priests are a sin against the church.

The Roman Church is totally losing touch with the world.
