Why seek? What is to be sought after?

Okay, and by dropping the mind, what do I become aware of?
I cannot explain to you what is your awareness. It is up to you to catch that experience. Truth cannot be told, explained, taught or transfered. It is an idividual experience.and one that only you will know.

Is this not true regardless if I meditate or not?

How come?

If you don't mind me asking.

To understand everything a little bit better.
A lot of people think that to embrace religion is to do so to the exclusion of everything else. I disagree. I think that religion can enhance everything else; putting a spiritual twist onto science, philosophy, education, ect. can help everything to mesh.

To find people who I can discuss specific ideas.
With people who share similar beliefs, we can exchange ideas and help each other to understand and grow. I've had my beliefs for quite a while, but discussing them people who do not share them, while sometimes fun and enlightening, often ends with debates and nothing accomplished.

To find a formal structure that fits me.
Using rituals and set practices to help me understand both theology and the community. By joining into the history and culture of the group, I hope to better understand both the belief system and the sacred texts.

Of course, this is just my reasoning for seeking. Everyone has their own reasons. And some people never feel the need to; they have their own beliefs, and are fine to keep it that way.

I have given you a hint, so it's up to you to do the rest.....

I guess, so to say, is that I have spent a decent amount of my life 'seeking', but I never found anything. I don't feel like there was anything to find. Can thoughts not be an appropriate manner to transfer things I already understand to be not 'truth'?

Once again thoughts are of the mind. When thoughts or thinking is used to gain the truth, it becomes belief or faith. The problem is, when one "believes", it becomes knowledge, borrowed and it becomes not your experience, but transfered from others

What were you seeking?

What were you seeking?

Many things, I suppose. A unifying force in the galaxy, a purpose that aligned perfectly with how I understood reality, some truth that prevails 100% in human existence, companionship, answers to questions not answered, etc.

And did you believe in these things?

companionship, answers to questions not answered, etc.
Companionship obviously exists. Answers, well... depends on the questions. ;)

I guess my point is, if you're just testing contrary beliefs, of course you're not going to find anything. You're not REALLY seeking it.

I am seeking a community of people with compatible beliefs and values to be a part of and some structure and direction in my life. I know religion isn't the only way to get these things, but I am happiest when there's some unifying thread running through my life. I like religion. I just don't have one anymore. :/

I've found a truth and that's good enough for me. Maybe not the capital-T Truth, but I wasn't really looking for that anyway. Reality just *is*, whether we look for it or not, so I am not worried about that. Now I am just looking for a community where my truth can at least be made to fit with enough greasing and creative interpretation. :)

Greetings Dust1n.
One might seek to understand what is to be sought . :) just kiddding. But seriously, one might seek to know one's Self. That is the way that the religion founders pointed us: http://www.religiousforums.com/foru...ir/1051-pitch-your-religion-5.html#post586838.

  • The kingdom of heaven is within you. (Jesus, Christianity)
  • Those who know themselves know their Lord. (Mohammad, Islam)
  • He is in all, and all is in Him. (Judaism)
  • Those who know completely their own nature, know heaven. (Mencius, Confucianism)
  • In the depths of the soul, one sees the Divine, the One. (The Chinese Book of Changes)
  • Atman [individual consciousness] and Brahman [universal consciousness] are one. (Hinduism)
  • Look within, you are the Buddha. (Buddhism)

From a particular perspective, understanding (literally "standing under" knowledge) is a never-ending process of seeking.

So you're a seeker too. :)

I'm trying to find what fits me..... the religion that mirrors my beliefs. I'm seeking a formal structure that fits me, a community that shares my beliefs, and the understanding of what it all means.

Would it not be wiser to fit into God's Ways?

Which God and which ways?

The Christian God and the ways of the Mormons? Or the way of the Catholics?
The Muslim God and the ways of the Sunni? Or of the Sufi?
Or the gods of the Norse or the Wiccans?

There are many views out there; I'm looking for the one that fits me.
