Baby Shower for a Muslim friend - need gift advice.

Hey guys - this may sound stupid, but as the title implies, I'm going to a baby shower this weekend for a friend of mine who is a Muslim from Pakistan (originally) and I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are any kinds of gifts I should avoid, so as not to offend. The baby is a girl, and she already has plenty of clothes.

Though, I'm sure you didn't want to hear it from me, but I got curious and looked for what I can find... which is this:

"Islamic gifts offered at an Aqeeqa usually include personalized clothing and bedding articles such as blankets and body suits, a collection of important Surah's from the Quran or a complete digital Quran that the mother can turn on for the baby to listen from early childhood. Feeding items such as bottles, Sippy cups and bowls with holy messages printed or engraved on them.

Other Islamic gifts considered appropriate for an Aqeeqa are hand knitted wraps, caps, mittens and socks for the baby, gold jewellery such as pendants with "Allah" or "Muhammad" written across them, identifying the child to be a born Muslim. Also available at certain places are Halal lotions, shampoos and soaps for the baby that does not contain any non permissible ingredients. As these types of products are relatively new and not easily available everywhere, they make thoughtful Islamic gifts for a Muslim baby and at the same time also promote awareness about such products among people who are not conscious of their existence."

Islamic Gifts For Welcoming New Babies

Though, I doubt anyone will be offended if you got more creative with it. ;)

You can buy her one of the things she will need, like baby cart, cradle or a chair, you know that stuff. Here, in Egypt sometimes the gifts are small golden ring for the baby or earrings...etc. I don't know what kind of gifts you are used to present there...

I would definitely avoid a gift card for any place who's specialty is barbecued or smoked meat.

A good thing to get may be a car seat for the baby, if she doesn't already have one.

Soft blankets are always appreciated. When my girls were babies, I had blankets and burp cloths in every room, ready to be picked up and used.

You could put together a sweet bathing basket with washcloths, a couple of hooded towels made just for babies, baby bath soap, baby powder, and a ducky. :) I would have LOVED that!

You could also put these things together in a small diaper bag. She'll no doubt have more than one bag, but we usually need more than one. Well...I convinced myself I needed more than one. :D I like bags.

(Shoot, this thread is giving me baby pangs.)

I don't think know if it is a religious thing or not, but some Islamic cultures don't like to have pictures of eyes on baby clothes. I can't say for sure if Pakistan is one of them, a friend of mine wouldn't have anything with any pictures at all for her baby, and it goes without saying piglet/peppa pig will not be appreciated.

I would say that bedding for cots and prams is a very good gift, you seriously can never have too many cot sheets, and as Anne said, blankets, especially cellular blankets, which are the ones that look like hospital blankets.

This is exactly what I was concerned about. I'm thinking blankets are the way to go. I can probably throw together a baby quilt before this weekend.

I meant to write pictures of eyes and pictures of animals .

I should mention that my friend is from Ethiopia so I can't say if it is an Ethiopian thing or a Muslim thing, or for that matter just an Aisha thing :biglaugh:

I have a similar question - my Muslim friend is having a baby shower, but beside a gift for the baby, I want to give her a special present, like a ring with an engraving. Will it be appropriate?
