I've watched it ruin lives of some of my best friends. They went from cigarettes to weed and went from top 10% of school students to kids who skipped school to smoke up.

A lot of people would say "you can't blame weed" but its pretty damn clear to see.

I'm not really curious to try it, i've been around it a lot and i don't see the point as i really don't need it.

I know many very high achievers who use it occasionally. I also know a person who was in the top 10% of his class who dropped out because of Video Games. Maybe we should make video games illegal.
If you had to make a hard and fast rule. It is best never to use any drug.(especially alcohol it's one of the worst.) Many people seem to be ok with pot use. I will also tell you that folks who have a problem with drugs most often we use pot with other drugs (like alcohol) or drop it for the hard stuff. I would say that the warning sign was not pot but cigarettes, why would anyone start to smoke. We have had 50 years of filling the jails with drug users. Maybe the government should just get it's hands out of the problem.

Definitely has a potential for abuse. Some people smoking it everyday need it and will be quite nervous when they are out of stash.

Best used not more than once a week. But still it wears off. Goes from amazing to dopey.

Taken in excess, it loses effect, to hardcore tokers a spliff that would incapacitate me is not much more effective than a coffee.

Should be legal. There is still a lot of myth surrounding it because of clandestine status. Let's face it, it's just a drug. You can take it, to know what effect it has, but once you know that, where's the point?

OK, as some type of aspirin against backpain, maybe.

I've never touched the stuff. I've had plenty of opportunities, even someone getting pretty feisty with me for continually refusing to join them in its use. I never will personally never use it.

Fair enough it is of course a legitimate personal stance, but such a dogmatic stance must have a reason, perhaps you could explain the basis of your decision not to indulge another aspect of the life experience, especially for example if down the track you are one of the three who will contract cancer, would your attitude change then?

I just find such black and white responses as awkward to understand as those that dogmatically demand its legalisation.

BTW I favor decriminalisation, it is a medical not criminal phenomena.

Cheers

Yeah, sure.

I live in a poor, working class area with a high rate of cannabis use. I've watched people indulge in it to the point where they became addicted and they would steal and shoplift to pay for their habits. I've encountered people who wouldn't buy their own children things because they wanted to buy some cannabis instead of a pushchair and clothes.

I went to a school where some of my class were habitual smokers of it, at 14 years old. I find the smell of it disgusting.

Those are my personal reasons, excluding the usual reasons such as a correlation between cannabis and paranoia, schizophrenia, underweight births in children from women who smoke cannabis whilst pregnant, and the fact it is supposed to cut a man's sperm mobility and ovulation in women and such and that it is theorised that it can make people 5 times more likely to develop lung cancer if one smokes it.

especially for example if down the track you are one of the three who will contract cancer, would your attitude change then?
Nope.

I hardly have a dogmatic view of it.

I'm sceptical of medical claims and would prefer it stayed illegal.

Also, this is a pre-emptive answer (not necessarily to you, Tiapan, but it often comes up when discussing cannabis): I don't smoke tobacco or drink alcohol. I rarely even drink caffeine. :)

Thank you for your response, it is reasoned and sensible with evidence, I withdraw the term dogmatic.

Legalizing would take care of that problem, considering one could just grow it for free.

Don't believe that for a second. If it is legalized it will be a controlled and regulated substance like tobacco. Can you just grow tobacco in your backyard for your own use? No. Pot is a drug and would be treated as such. That is, it would be corporate farmed, processed, packaged, taxed out the wahzoo and sold like cigarettes. Have you seen the price of cigarettes lately? I quit smoking over 4 years ago and when I smoked I could buy a pack of my brand for about $1.80. Now, they're around $5 a pack. They've skyrocketed. Some people can't afford to buy them, but also can't quit no matter how they try and are scraping to get by just to feed their addiction. You really think it would be any different for pot? Sure, one could start growing it themselves, but make no mistake, the legality of you growing it wouldn't change from now. You want to grow it? Think about the hoops you'll have to jump through to do so. Licenses, fees, taxes, regulations, inspections and so on IF they would even allow the regular Joe to privately grow it.

So on RF we're not supposed to discuss personal engagement in or encouraging illegal activities.

Here's my question... illegal by who's laws?

So discussing smoking a joint in Amsterdam is okay, but discuss smoking a joint in the US is not?

Or is the trick not to say where you did it?

It's just best to talk about other means of taking spiritual journeys.

Dude, you totally can. Like Smoke said, doing so would be really impractical (tobacco is both harder to grow and cure than cannabis, and you DO NOT want to smoke uncured tobacco), but nothing's stopping you. Just like how you can brew your own beer. Just because something's treated as a drug, it doesn't necessarily mean regular folks can't legally produce it.

What... like mushrooms?

Amanita Muscaria is legal in the USofA. I do not recommend ever eating it. I'm not sure if actually consuming it is illegal, so I'll just say I've heard the side effects were rather unpleasant and ruined any potential for recreational value.

And what happens when they have smoked all of it? They will begin buying their own. Not to mention the fact most people here don't have gardens either.

A poor, working class area with a high rate of cannabis use, high unemployment, high crime rates (including for violent crime), and even an addiction onto even harder drugs, the legalising of cannabis would help, how?

As Draka said, there would be masses of paperwork, regulations, fees, licences etc for the one who could grow it if one could do it for free - however, I expect that some groups would have a monopoly over it and they would make it incredibly difficult to do it.

Since a lot of people even pay for their vegetables and don't grow those, I expect it would be the same way, only far more expensive. People would still be going to buy the drug, only a few "entrepreneurs" would go ahead and start growing it, and these people would have plenty of money. I'd expect them to be using houses to do it instead of living in them. There is a cannabis farmhouse about 5 minutes from me, and with legalising it and the ability to grow it, I'd expect there to be more like ten.

Then should we make tobacco and alcohol illegal as well?

Or, you know, we can attack the actual causes of crime rather than scapegoating a drug. Address economic inequality, and you don't have to worry about any amount of drug use significantly affecting crime rates.
