What happened the Moonies?

There seemed to be loads of them one time, mass weddings etc. I haven't heard anything about them in ages. Have they disappeared?

Done here.
Today is Sun Myung Moon's 90th birthday. The Moonies are still around, but they seem to number in the hundreds in most countries except for the United States and South Korea, the two developed countries most friendly to crazy religious movements. In the US and South Korea it looks like they have tens of thousands of adherents in each country.

Moon founded the Washington Times to give a Republican slant on the news from Washington, and the Unification Church has run it at a loss ever since. That seems to be the activity that's most visible to outsiders.

The rabidly anti-gay Moon has a strong commitment to traditional family values, and his four marriages and numerous extra-marital affairs resulted in at least 17 children, though at his age he's probably pretty much done with all that.

I always thought there was scope for a really good comedy in that - the illegitimate son of the son of god has the potential to make 'The Life of Brian' sound staid :D.
WHere's Monty Python when you need them

The wierdos du jour can only hold the public's attention for so long....

Hi, I'm an American and a Unification Church member living in Japan with my wife and three children.

The Unification Church is still going strong in well over a hundred countries in the world. It is true, as one poster said, that there are a number of members in the United States and South Korea. However, the church in Japan may have the largest number of dedicated followers. There are also thousands of members in many countries, such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. There are also many members in a number of African countries. I think there are few countries in fact where there are no members, although as is the case with Christians and followers of other faiths, there are some where believers have to operate underground because of persecution.

Most people tend to judge a religion, or how it's doing, by what they see in front of their eyes. For example, people living the US use the Unification Church in America as a yardstick for judging the state of the movement worldwide, which gives a very partial picture at best. In America the church was more visible 20 or 30 years ago for several reasons. First, there were scores of members out on the streets witnessing and fundraising, so a lot of people bumped into them. Those same people are now raising families, and engaged in all kinds of businesses and activities. In many cases they now have adult children. But, they don't stick out as much as before. Also, there was a lot of media coverage in past decades (most of it negative), than there is now, because the church was viewed as more controversial. Now that the church and its members generate less controversy, it doesn't generate as much media attention.

If you have any questions I'll try to answer them, although I'm not able to constantly monitor this forum.

Very good point. People tend to only see what jumps in front of them, such as those screaming and trying to make everyone conform to their ways. The rest of us are on the side, watching and shaking our heads at them.

Let me guess the only 2 categories that would fit this "people" would be
1 Christians
2 Politicians
;)

No, there are more...

There are loud African American groups that do not necessarily represent the views of the average African American.

There are loud homosexual groups that do not necessarily represent the views of the average homosexual.

Pretty much anybody that has been proclaimed a segregated group (by themselves or others) and attempts to use that segregation as a voice is the problem.

Your right, but the 2 that I mentioned generate more conversation, especially on the forum.....;)

True...I try not to mention the Christians all that much though because I don't want to seem like I am bashing them. I can just leave hints and let folks connect the dots. ;)

Thank you for that.....We can all have an opinion, even disagree and still be courteous to each other.....
I even find it fun to ridicule my own beliefs sometime, because some things just don't make sense. Especially the contradictions.
