I've "converted" to Modern Satanism. Being a Christian most of my life I have relied on God for comfort. Praying, reading scripture, etc. Recently I became agnostic (and still am) because I simply could not stop deceiving myself and have my mind go around in circles. However agnosticism alone has not been able to relieve me of my need to worship. Now after much self-deliberation and the reading of Satanic literature I've decided that Satanism is the right religion for me. It is the only religion I have found that is not only logical for me to follow but it does essentially feel that being a Satanist is helping me become a "better" person. Perhaps not in the sense of benevolence or empathy. But in the sense of becoming a leader.

paradigm change?
or "simple" worship trade off?

I'd love to hear more.
It's an intreuiging notion.

BTW I admire your courage!
OMG! What must friends and family be saying?!

I suppose paradigm change is accurate enough. I have never thought of myself worthy of worship before if that's what you're trying to say. Haha well my friends have been quite understanding of my choice. I will probably tell my mom when I come home for Thanksgiving. I definitely don't want to tell her over the phone! :cover:

Congrats on the decision! I hope all goes well for you. Be sure to open up the conversation gently with your folks; they may still have old-fashioned notions about what Satanism is.

Would you care to go into more detail about why you have a need to worship? Does anyone else reading this post feel they need to worship and why?

It all depends on the person. Certainly not all non-theists are Satanists (although LaVey might argue they are as well as everyone else but that's another story). No I suppose I do not need to worship anything. My life will not be in shambles without Satanism in my life. But Satanism is a religion that essentially has it's followers strive to improve themselves, obviously not so much in the spiritual sense. But I really have no interest in climbing up the spirituality ladder, if there is such a thing.

Hurray for more activity in the Modern Satanism section!

Well good luck with your new path, you'll need it to overcome the ignorance you'll be facing. So what Satanic literature have you read?

Worship yourself, the only thing that you know for sure to this point is that things don't happen unless you make them happen. Searching for supernatural explanations for everything can get tiring when in all reality the explanations are right in front of your face (in your actions). Start with the Satanic Bible if you haven't already.

It is interesting that you have gone from christianity to satanism. I feel hard pressed to worship anything. I have been an athiest my whole life, well when I was young I did got to church, Christian Science, but I told the sunday school teacher I did not beleive in god when I was about ten and my mother stoped making me go.
I am having a hard time figuring out if satanism is really what I want. I feel like religion should be a choice, but I am having a hard time controlling what I beleive. I like that I can have it both ways with satanism, not absolutly belive in a higher power, but still have something more than nothing.
Hope that made sense. I guess my point was that it is interesting where we have all been before we get where we belong.

UltraViolet may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what she was asking is have you actually outgrown one and stepped into a larger universe or have you simply traded in a god with a white beard and sandals for one with horns and cloven hooves? Pretty much how Wiccans decide to substitute mommy in the sky for daddy in the sky, so they are basically still subordinating themselves to a higher power and hence the difference is only superficial and not an essential one.

Yes Man,
Strange post, what make it strange is that I thought that Agnosticism meant that you are not sure in a deity, yet you O.P. states “my need to worship”, “It is the only religion I have found that is not only logical for me to follow”, where is the logic to feel this if you cannot be sure if there is such deity?
“I will probably tell my mom when I come home for Thanksgiving.” Why? To be really effective in hurting her more? Have you thought of what her feeling are going to be? Very strange post and you do need lot of prayers. I hope your mon is already praying.

Somnio, ergo existo.
I understand that "the need to worship," though do understand one thing: "worship" literally means, "to work for."

When you "worship" a god, you work for that god upon this earth. Thus, a worshipper of a god such as Apollo might do His work on earth by being an artist or a healer.

When you worship yourself, you work for yourself - that is, you put your focus on yourself to make yourself the best that you can be.

I find that rituals are often helpful in this, because through my rituals I achieve different states of mind which help me to see what it is I need to do to better myself. Rituals also help me to connect to more power and inspiration that charges and fuels my working to better myself.

Be careful not to go substituting one god outside of yourself for another - while you might see that greater sense of inspiration and power, know that you are the source of it. You are your own salvation. It's your life - now go make the best of it!

I'm interested in your mom's response....

I know I'm in a thread where I probably am not welcome but I do like diversity and enjoy talking to other people where I can gain new info.
Do you have other close friends who are satanist? It makes it easier when you enter into something new to have support.

This thread is sooooo old! A lot has happened since I first created this thread. I don't consider myself a Satanist any longer. My interest in Satanism was largely the self-empowerment principle and magic. So I was looking to Satanism to make a better me essentially. And since, The Satanic Bible isn't a self-help book, :))) I very quickly moved on to other spiritual ideas and actual self help books  . However, I must say that my very brief fling with Satanism influenced a lot of my views on the world today. Vital existence i.e. physical existence is just as important as spiritual existence. Being selfish can be a good thing etc, etc.

ahahahaha it was an interesting read. :). i thought it was going to be somekind of satire of my sarcastic thread in which i "forsake" my agnosticism. I am now converted. but i see that you, being agnostic, were simple also saying NO to the detachment princible common to 'spirituality'. Agnosticism was well shown by Sidhartha Gautama, but the worldly detachment principle seams as detremental to life as the spiritual attachment principle of other fundamentalist religions. It just seams to show that as Agnostics we can only seak to be better people, in light of what we really know; not what we believe.
