Burning a Mosque and holy books in West Bank

Sajdah

Al-Aqsa Is In My Heart.
YASUF, West Bank – Assailants vandalized a Palestinian mosque early Friday, burning prayer carpets and holy books, and leaving behind Hebrew graffiti indicating the rampage was the work of settlers angry over Israel's plans to curb settlement construction.
Israeli settlers have repeatedly attacked Palestinians and their property in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to scale back settlement building under U.S. pressure. They call the attacks the "price tag" policy.
The assailants entered the village of Yasuf in the northern West Bank before dawn Friday, according to Israeli police and Munir Abushi, the Palestinian governor of the district where the village is located.
They burned prayer carpets and a book stand with Muslim holy texts, and left graffiti on the floor reading, "Price tag — greetings from Effi." Effi is a Hebrew name.
The vandals escaped. The Israeli military said it views the incident "gravely" and is investigating along with the police.

After villagers discovered the damage, they briefly threw stones at Israeli forces that entered Yasuf, Abushi said. He said two villagers were hurt in the skirmish.
Abushi met with Israeli police and army officers and expressed his dismay over repeated settler attacks.
Israeli security forces have done little to protect Palestinian civilians from the settlers, he said, echoing a charge often made by Palestinians and Israeli and international rights groups.
In an apparent attempt to placate settlers over the construction slowdown, Netanyahu has proposed including tens of thousands of settlers, including many living in isolated settlements deep in the West Bank, in a government program that bestows monetary incentives on residents and businesses.
The move has drawn criticism from Netanyahu's coalition partner, the centrist Labor Party, which has indicated it will vote against the move at a Cabinet meeting next week

Fear of new attacks means “silent” Christmas for Christians
by Fareed Khan

Outdoor recitals, carols and decorations are cancelled. Liturgical services and Midnight Mass will go ahead as usual. Bishops talk about an “atmosphere of fear;” yet the faith of Christian believers is stronger than the violence. The commission of inquiry investigating last summer’s violence in Gojra calls on the government to change the blasphemy laws.

Lahore (AsiaNews) – Pakistani Christians are preparing for a silent and low key Christmas without much public pomp and display. The community is still reeling from last summer’s attacks against the villages of Koriyan and Gojra. The army’s offensive against Islamic extremists and the latter’s wave of attacks are not helping either. Indeed, fear of more violence remains high.

Mgr Lawrence John Saldanha, archbishop of Lahore and president of the Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan, told AsiaNews that 2009 is going to end in a “silent Christmas” because the country’s situation is very bad.

In previous years, schools and parishes used to organise outdoor recitals, carols and other events associated with the festivities. This year, many people “have already cancelled events” and “outdoor decorations will not be put up on homes and buildings.”

“This year, the atmosphere and mood are not happy because people are fearful and upset by the country’s current situation,” the archbishop said. Still, liturgical functions and Midnight Mass will go ahead as in the past, and “the number of people will not be less because their faith is firm.”

Attacks against villages and extrajudicial killings carried out in the name of the blasphemy laws have fuelled fears and concerns in the Christian community. However, there are some small signs of hope for change.

A commission of inquiry chaired by a judge from the High Court in Lahore into events in Gojra, a village that was attacked last summer with homes set on fire and eight people killed, called on the government to take a number of steps, including bring changes to the blasphemy laws.

Adopted in 1986 under the rule of then Pakistan dictator Zia-ul-Haq, these laws impose life in prison or the death penalty on anyone who desecrates the Qur‘an or defiles the name of Muhammad.

Come on, people - live and let live!

So when anything is going to happen to Muslims you will come up with some links from here and there to say that all Muslims are extremists and they deserve everything happening to them?!

The case here is not only about religious intolerance it is also about the settlements and its policies. Obviously those settlers were supported by the government.....It is not the first time they burn mosques and kill Muslims inside them....

In what seems to signal an escalation of organized Jewish terror against Palestinians and their property, suspected Jewish terrorists on Friday torched a mosque in the northern West Bank .

Palestinians sources said armed settlers from a nearby settlement threw flammable substance inside the Hasan Khadr Mosque at the village of Yasuf near Salfit, 15 kilometers, south west of Nablus .

The incident occurred around 4:00 am shortly before dawn.

The suspected terrorists also scrawled Nazis slogans in Hebrew, reading “revenge” and “we will burn all of you.” Other scrawls read “price-tag-greeting from Effi” Effi is a Hebrew name.

Yasuf local council head Abdul Rahim Musleh said the fire gutted the mosque’s interior, including the carpeted floor, numerous, numerous Qurans and as well as furniture..

The targeted mosque is the largest of four mosques in the village of 2000 inhabitants.

Munir Abbushi, the governor of the Salfit district, where the terrorist act took place, accused the Israeli government and army of encouraging the settler terrorists to attack Palestinians.

“The Israeli army is doing nothing to protect the Palestinians from the settler aggression. Army inaction encourages the settlers to escalate their terror against our people and holy places,” said Abbushi.

The head of the Israeli army’s so-called Civil Administration in the West Bank , Yoav Mordechai, condemned the torching of the mosque, saying he would see to it that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

However, Palestinians doubt Israeli sincerity in combating organized Jewish terror carried out by settlers indoctrinated in extremist religious ideology advocating genocide against non-Jews.

Khalid Maali, a Palestinian journalist from Salfit, attributed the incident to repeated edicts, or religious rulings, by rabbis urging settlers to kill Palestinians and vandalize their property.

“These rabbis are saying in broad daylight that it is a mitzvah (good religious deed) to murder non-Jews and destroy their property. And these terrorist settlers are simply acting on and carrying out these edicts.”

Maali charged that the Israeli government and army were legitimizing settler attacks against Palestinians by failing to apprehend and punish terrorists involved in terrorist attacks.

“This is tantamount to encouraging them to commit more terror. When these terrorist are allowed to get away with impunity, the Israeli government is effectively telling them that you can attack Palestinians and torch mosques and have nothing to worry about.”

Reactions

The torching of the Hasan Khadr mosque has drawn angry reactions from Palestinian leaders on both sides of the Green Line.

Ahmed Teibi, a prominent leader of the 1.5 million-strong Arab community in Israel , who is also a Knesset member, held Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak responsible for this “sinful act.”

“By giving these thugs (Jewish settlers) a carte blanch to maraud and rampage throughout the West Bank , the Israeli army and government are effectively encouraging them to commit crimes against the Palestinians.”

He urged the occupation army to immediately put an end to settler terror and violence before the situation gets out of hand.

The league of Muslim Ulema or religious scholars in occupied Palestine strongly condemned the “sacrilegious act,” calling on the Palestinian Authority to stop stripping Palestinians of fire arms.

“The PA has stripped the people of their arms. Now we stand unable to defend and protect ourselves. And the PA security agencies are not allowed to repulse settler attacks as their only task is to fight the resistance fighters,” said league chief Sheikh Hamed al Beitawi.

Al-Beitawi, who is also an elected member of the Palestinian legislative council who has spent years in Israeli jails for opposing the Israeli military occupation, also denounced rabbis for issuing edicts to their followers, inciting them to murder Palestinians and vandalize their property.

“These rabbis call themselves men of peace, but true men of peace don’t incite to terror and hatred and bloodshed. Imagine how these rabbis would react if a Jewish synagogue was torched in London or in Paris. They would invoke the entire history of anti-Semitism from the Spanish inquisition to the Nazi holocaust.”

Settler leaders have repeatedly said they will attack Palestinians and their property every time the Israeli army moves to vacate settlers from illegal outposts. The threats have been carried out, with settlers attacking Palestinian farmers, especially olive-pickers, businesses and now mosques.

This is not the first time Jewish terrorists attack Muslim holy places. In 1994, a Jewish terrorist who had immigrated from the United States, riddled Muslim worshipers with bullets at the Ibrahimi Mosque in downtown al Khalil, killing 29 and injuring and maiming dozens.

The terrorist, Baruch Goldstein, who was eventually killed by survivors, became a saintly figure for right-wing Jewish fanatics who advocate the extermination, enslavement or expulsion of non-Jews from mandatory Palestine (the land between the River Jordan to the Mediterranean).

The Aqsa Mosque in al Quds has also been a constant target for organized Jewish terror since Israel occupied the city from Jordan in 1967.

Similarly, other mosques, both in the West Bank and pre-1948 Palestine, have been repeatedly vandalized and desecrated by supremacist Jewish groups seeking the extirpation of non-Jews from Palestine.

Absolutely not - and in fact if our local mosque was attacked, I would be right there on the front lines defending it.

What I am saying is that if Islam wants the rest of the world to support their fight against religious intolerance in Israel, they should fight religious intolerance, which is RAMPANT throughout Muslim-dominated areas of the world, with a vengeance.

Also, the Muslim nations around Israel should allow Palestinians to immigrate to their countries more freely - but from what I understand there is a lot of animosity toward that idea from Jordan and other Middle Eastern countries - though the US allows many Palestinians to immigrate here. In fact, there are roughly 200,000 Palestinian immigrants currently living in the US.

The Arab American Institute | Issues

Do you have a source on the rate of Palestininan immigration to other neighboring countries? I am having a hard time finding one.

Not that immigration alone is the answer - but these people seem to be TRAPPED. If I couldn't better my life where I was, I would want to be able to go elsewhere.

Muslims don't want anything from anyone, just do what is right....

Is that the solution of the "religious intolerance"?! To encourage palestinians to give up their rights? To leave their lands, and give it to zionists?!
So why don't you say the same thing to the christians who are going to celebrate Christmas in silence?!

n a statement, Mr Netanyahu "vigorously denounced the aggression against the mosque".
He said he had told security forces "to act with determination to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice".
Other Israeli leaders added their voices to the condemnation.
On Saturday, Israeli President Shimon Peres called it "an incendiary criminal act against all the moral principles of the state of Israel".
"The government, security forces and all authorities must spare no effort to catch the guilty parties," he said.
On Friday, Defence Minister Ehud Barak branded the attack "an extreme act meant to harm the government's attempts to advance the process for Israel's future."

Thanks for the source. Interesting reading.

I specifically said that I did NOT think that immigration alone is the answer, or an ideal answer for anyone - but it is ONE solution, and it's obviously a viable solution for some people.

The United States is full of immigrants who moved here because of infringement on their rights in their country of origin. It's one answer that can work well for some people.

However, I am adamantly against the abuse of human rights of Palestinians.

The problem is complicated though by the polarization that Islam seems to mandate. As we've discussed in various threads, Islam itself exxacerbates the separation between itself and others by it's OWN intolerant stance.

It's really a shame, because the Palestinian people are truly suffering.

As for the Christians who are forced to celebrate Christmas in silence throughout the Muslim world - I would definitely encourage them to get the hell out of Dodge if at all possible. Unfortunately, there's no future for them in a Muslim-dominated society.

No one invited me to discuss the intolerant stance of Islam! Anyway what were the conclusion of those discussions? That Islam is really intolerant religion as most of the conclusions of the hypocritical threads here?!!!

It's really a shame, because the Palestinian people are truly suffering.

So my christian neighbours will not celebrate Christmas this year?!! I thought it is only going to happen in Pakistan!!

The violence there has little to do with religion. It's the political and geographical situation there.

How ironical!

BBC News said:
All Jewish settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

LOL, we know that it is just a propaganda to cover up their huge crime of the illegal settlements!

And Islam in the Middle East and Asia and Africa is just as much a political system as an expression of faith - maybe even more so.

That's like saying the US is occupying Iraq and Afghanistan not because of politics but because it is a Christian country. Rubbish.

The difference ...
The conflict between Jews and Arabs in the Land of Israel has taken many forms over the past 90 years since the Passover Riots of April 1920, which mark the first real organized local Arab effort to overturn the political decision made to reconstitute the Jewish National Home. Almost all of those forms have been violent.

There was once a display of black flags in Bet Shean when the High Commissioner appeared for a courtesy visit, but otherwise it was the secret Black Hand Society founded in 1919, Haj Amin El-Husseini, Azziz A-Din Al-Qassam and Yasser Arafat that dominated the scene - with terror, brigandage, slaughter and fire. Before Hamas was Fatah, and before Fatah were the fedayeen, and before the fedayeen there were the gangs.

Ethnic cleansing was initiated and put into practice by Arabs. They caused the loss, temporarily, of Tel Hai in 1920, of Hebron, Gaza City, Jenin and Hulda in 1929, of Atarot, Bet HaAravah, Gush Etzion and Jerusalem's Old City in 1948. During the 1948-1967 exile from the heartland of Eretz-Yisrael, the Mount of Olives cemetery was desecrated and over 30 synagogues with the Old City walls were ransacked. Today, the Temple Mount has no Jewish religious value nor scientific archaeological worth for the Waqf authorities dig up, dump and destroy. Since the Oslo Accords, the Arabs have torched Joseph's Tomb in Nablus and vandalized the Shalom Al Yisrael 4th century synagogue in Jericho.

We have had two intifadas during which Arabs exclusively targeted civilians, preferably young children on school buses, diners at restaurants and pizza parlors, shoppers at grocery stores and malls, and pedestrians.

Last Friday morning, it was reported that a section of a mosque was set afire at Yassuf. Israel's President, Prime Minister, Ministers, MKs and a host of others, including rabbis from Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, condemned the deed without waiting for any confirmation. As was proper. In addition, UN Special Coordinator Robert Serry, the EU represented by Sweden's Consul-General Eliasson and some public relations clerk in the US Consulate-General also chimed in with denunciations.

And then a woman, 22 years old, was stabbed in Gush Etzion by an Arab. She was Jewish.

Silence.

The difference.
It is my sincere hope that those responsible for this terrorist attack against the Mosque are caught and punished to the fullest extent allowed by law, and that those responsible for persistent terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians are fully neutralized or eliminated.
