conversion to jainism

HI! I am a white american and i was wondering if i could convert to jainism. I really like the religion and i feel that it is true. When i look up how to convert on yahoo and google there are no real answers. I dont get a yes or a no. So i was wondering if anyone here had the answer. THANK YOU!

My impression with most dharmic paths is that it is your adoption of the teaching rather than conversion which opens the door.

To echo the other answers, I don't think there is any conversion ritual; one simply begins to follow the Jain dharma -- which is no small undertaking.

Jainism, buddhism, sikhism are all extentions of SANATN DHARMA.
Sanatan Dharma means the ETERNAL PATH or a WAY OF LIFE.
Which simply means a PATH that was, is and will remain. There is no ownership.
Any human whatever may be his way of life is covered by it.
However since as usual minds [thoughts] create dualities and so the same definition will not be accepted by followers of islam or christ and so it is now narrowed down to people who follow some known or popular PATHS .
To live in society and fulfill many obligations one has to declare which is his religion for records and for visiting places of worships certain times some novice may ask if you are a follower and if not may embarrass and so to avoid it best is to go to a JAIN temple and ask the priest to ordain you in jainism and thereafter be inducted and follow it.

i've never heard of Jainism before. could you please give a brief explanation of your path? what do you believe in? what's your aim in life?

No use as you will come across the same type of mantras and then will state :

sometimes people confuse some practices we do with meditation. if you're not using any mantra, meditation is about breaking chain of thoughts and keeping mind still which anyone can do even while cooking or walking...etc. i do like stillness of mind. but using mantras is different from keeping mind still, free of thoughts. every mantra starts with Om which represents nothingness or emptiness. there is nothing in there but dark. darkness is where satan belongs.

For your information it is an extension of sanatan dharma like buddhism, sikhism etc.

I don't aspire to be a Jain, but I am interested in Jainism. I think perhaps the dharmas are one Dharma in different guises. From Sanatana Dharma are born Jainism and Buddhism, and these are in one way reactions against Sanatana Dharma, but they are also its children. For a Westerner, the Buddhist Dharma is more accessible; it is the most outgoing Dharma. Buddhism meets Bon and they make Vajrayana. Buddhism meets Daoism and they make Zen. Buddhism meets the West, and it remains to be seen what they will make. But I look in at Sanatana Dharma and Jainism, too, to see what I can learn.

The comment was just a banter an excuse for this communication.
Yes labels make no differences.
Personally too though born in a family following sanatan dharma, live with jain family [being single] mingle with others, read and try to understand most WAYS or PATHS or RELIGION but practise my own which is the core of all religions/paths/ways i.e. DHYANA or ZEN but in the manner that suits me am not adjusting to suit any rigid system but implementing the understanding of the systems in my own life and that is my way of life. Dharma is nothing but a WAY of life.
Its all a question of season for flowering each flower has a different season. Am sure everyone is already on the way, some realise it, most don't.

In short, Jainism is the religion of non-violence. It is the religion of Mahavira, and the other 23 tirthankaras, or realized souls. It forbids violence of any kind. All Jains are at least lacto-vegetarians. Many are fruitarians. There is also a strong ascetic tradition. I was once an ascetic.

Jainism differs from buddhism

1)Existence of soul in jainism ,it is not present in Buddhism.
2)Karma theory is little different, because there is no soul in Buddhism.U can refer to it other threads here.

Buddhism emphasis on non-violence(vegetarianism) and asceticism is not as strict as in Jainism.Jainism is highly ascetic.

I like Jain's Anekanatavada(non-exclusivity) ,beats vedanta theory hands down.

Can u explain how Sikhism is different from Hinduism?

Please elaborate why you have come to this conclusion, Anti-Religon.
I am happy to read a bullet point summary of pros and cons for example, I am interested. Also which school of Vedanta, or do you apply that to all schools?
