Colonel Victor Fehrenbach was discharged from the Air Force for being gay, wasting several million dollars that we spent training him for his job, a crucial one for which he was awarded several medals. Here's the video. Story here. This policy is hurting all of us (as discrimination always does.)

Let me make sure I understand what you're saying. This is a much decorated, honorably serving fighter pilot who has spent the last 18 years literally defending us from terrorism, who was dispatched to protect the nation on September 11, who is prepared to go to Afghanistan to attack Al Qaeda there, and your idea is that we should fire him and ask him to pay us $25 million as a reward for his service?!?! How would that make us safer exactly?

God would be less likely to punish us with earthquakes, tsunamis, and terrorism. Duh.

Some random thoughts on DADT:

The writing is on the wall. It will be gone within the next few years, probably sooner.

The majority of Americans support abolishing it. poll.

IMO repealing this policy will have an enormous impact on gay rights and acceptance, in a way similar to the impact that African-American service members had on civil rights. It's tough to tell someone whose partner has died defending us that they can't have the flag or the widow's benefits.

It has reached the point where DADT is causing more damage to our safety than benefit. Regardless of your views on homosexuality, you Conservatives, if you really cared about the country, you would set them aside for the sake of the nation's security. (This verifies a theory I have that Conservatives are fundamentally unpatriotic.)

If all the lesbians in the military came out tomorrow, the policy would have to be abolished the following day.

DADT was always stupid. Even if you're against gays in the military, you should favor a policy disallowing them to serve, not a policy that requires them to lie. That's just dumb.

tick. tick. tick.

Those are a few of my thoughts.

I seem to recall that several Arabic translators were let go not because they were of Arab descent but because they were gay. I don't have a reference for that, sorry. But that'd be yet another case where the war on Al-Queda had been made harder than it needed to be. Worse, it spits in the face of those who are obviously patriotic Americans willing to be put in harm's way to defend your way of life. This really is an issue of civil rights; discrimination based on gender identity is not the way to conduct yourself as a society, period (let alone the safety issues raised in particular with respect to DADT). I hope Autodictat is right about the policy, and the attitudes that support it, are on the way out.
