Recently I find myself defending the Bible, even though I don't, myself, believe in it. LOL. How bizarre. When I first joined this forum, I had a rather bad taste of Christianity in my mouth. That taste hasn't gone, as I'm not converting back to Christianity any time soon, but I do think it's odd that I find more comfort in helping the religious of any faith rather than being the antagonist. I guess it could be because I've actually met some REALLY decent Christians recently.

Any thoughts on why?

Has this ever happened to you?

Maybe its' just for a change of pace... who knows?

I completely agree. :) I would defend Muslims if they ever needed help. (Of course, I haven't been so nice to Zhakir lately... which is something I'm not too happy with. I shouldn't be mean to someone no matter what.) But I do appreciate everyone, and I'm against cynicism and fanaticism. I think everyone should get a fair say, even if they may be mistaken.

When I entered this forum I had nothing against any of the rligions, but I was mostly defending my own belief. Now I realize that you can defend whatever you want, they either won't listen or a new anti-BBB will pop up.
I think defending my own belief became boring and started defending other people's belief as well.. :D

Maybe the same applies to you?

Perhaps you are starting a healing process wich allows you to broaden your perspective and allows you to stop looking at the Bible as a representation of one religion (or denomination) which you had personal experience with.
The Bible can be studied and read in many fashions: secular, from the lens of a few religions, spiritual, etc.
I'd hate to see the Bible being monopolised. beyond its religious and academic benefit, the Bible has been an inspiration to some of our finest art and music.

It's happened to me, a lot. :D Even religions I don't have much interest in, or even liking for, I defend for some reason. :D

Weird isn't it? O_O It's like "I don't even LIKE this faith myself... but someone's gotta stick up for the guys!" hah, strange.

Lol! Yeah, it's -very- weird. :D

Maybe it's part of our fairness instinct, or something? The same way as if you see two people picking on someone you go and help? Hummm.

When I was a young Catholic, I immersed myself in religion and intended to become a nun. The more I read, the more I was turned off, until I turned away entirely. Over the past 15 years, however, I've learned that all religions have good in them, but none have all the answers. All religion once drew from the same well, and as the "water" was carried back to each different tribe, it was changed and morphed into whatever that particular group wanted it to be. Yet all have that original water of truth, somewhere amid all the waters congealing in their vessels. The trick, for want of a better word, is to study many religions in order to find those common waters.

Now, I find myself defending many aspects of Christianity. There are so many beautiful aspects. While I will never be a "traditional" Christian and I will never accept the hostile, violent, male-biased nature of much of it, I embrace the good in it, just as I do the good in many other faiths.

Hi,

I love your sentiments. I am the same way. I tried to be a Christian for a while but just couldn't get past certain things. I always think that I don't want to hurt the good Christians, the people who are loving and kind. So, I try to act like a Christian when I meet these people. I am actually a Monotheist with no particular religion. I believe that there is a God but you can call it anything you want. I believe that it is pure love for everyone. I don't believe in judgement, etc.

I see that you have a good heart. If you believe in God, know that God loves your heart.

:)

I dismiss the OT as largely the tale of Satan masquerading as God. Likewise, I dismiss all but Gospels of the NT as nothing more than commentary- and of those Gospels I dismiss all talk of 'miracles'. As such, to get to the heart of Christianity- Jesus' teachings- I turn to Thomas Jefferson's Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth.
