Unification Church?

I'm relatively new here so this may have been mentioned before.
I see all kinds of religion discussed here and all kinds of Christian denominations....except one (there may be others) and that is The Unification Church of Sun Myung Moon.
They teach from the Bible and I would call Christian since Moon claims that who ever can fulfill the prophesy of the second coming of Jesus is the Messiah. And of course that is his goal.
What do you guys and gals think?

Here's the sum total of what I know of it: Unification Church

Sure sounds like a cult to me.

It was called a cult and maybe still is but then so was Christianity at first. I thought it was trying to unify all religions but I read in your link that it was only all Christian denominations.
To unify all religions would take outright miracles and the same goes for Christian denominations.
Thanks for the link.

It is odd to me that this thread is in the Liberal Christianity section because the Unification Church is against so many things Liberal Christians support. For example gay rights, a womans right to choose, etc. Sun Myung Moon is a big supporter of right wing political causes and own the Washington Times, a right wing newspaper.

In a lot of ways the UC is a liberation from earlier denominations eventhough what you say is correct. In the big picture with everything considered it is, imo. one direction for us to at least look and analyse, in our effort to eliminate as much as possible the suffering of the human race. There are unending opinions about how to do that, mostly religious, and a lot of people who don't even give it a thought. Sacrifices would have to be made, obviously, and most would not want to make the effort. It is in a way what we decide about how we see ourselves, gross animals or something far beyond with unedning potential, or both.
p.s. I don't have access to a computer very often but will try to check in as often as possible.

Certainly seems like a cult to me. I don't see how they can ever hope to unify all denominations. Ours for a start would be diametrically opposed to a great deal of what they stand for. Heck, I'd rather become an atheist than join this.

My father was a Moonie for a while in the 70's. He just checked them out for kicks. They said they preferred people who were at a painful time in their lives, but they would take him in. They put him through several days of education at first. At first, it was basically christianity. But as the talks went on, the beliefs were getting weirder and weirder. Eventually, it came out that Reverend Moon was the messiah in his second coming. Korean was the holy language, and was going to become the world's official language. They were told to give up everything they owned but the clothes on their back to Reverend Moon for charitable purposes. My father left after he spotted a visiting member of Moon's inner circle given his watch to wear.

They have every red flag of a cult.

Christianity is not syncretism.

Christianity is not syncretism.

I was reminded of this forum because someone posted to it recently and I got an e mail regarding it.

I believe that the UC would bring Christ but not the Church together with other beliefs. But their Divine Principle book on their teachings mentions nothing of other beliefs and is independent in itself.

It has a slight element of Buddhism in it as you might expect because of it's founder being from S. Korea.

Their intentions are good as written but I don't know what Rev. Moon's intentions are of course.

They have owned a newspaper in Washington D.C. for many years and have met behind the scenes with Presidents etc. They have been out or sight for the most part for many years.

Mr. Moon did 6 mths in jail for tax evasion and they own a lot of big properties in many places.

It is strange that one of Moon's Sons "fell" from the window of a hotel to his death and another died in a train "accident."
He may have refused to be manipulated by tptb but that's just a guess on my part.

It might be worth while checking them out from a distance as they have some power but that is relative. Compared with other powers on our Earth it is hard to say how much.

Spiritone, been a few years, I wonder if you're still out there, years after this originally posted. I'm a Unificationist and would love to shed some light on the subject for you.

Hi, could you please shed some light on my previous post about my dad? I'm not against the church at all, just wanting to reconcile my father's stories. Why did a senior church official wear my dad's heirloom watch which was surrendered for charity purposes? If Reverend Moon was the messiah, why is the world not different after his death?

And in general: Why would the people making a thread claiming to seek information about this religion ignore the only post from someone personally affected by the church, while addressing all the speculative ones?

edited to add: sorry, it wasn't the 70's it happened in 1981.

Ladies and gents, this is a time when I wish I hadn't come on so strongly. I had the opportunity to communicate with two people probably associated with the unification church and had the chance to ask about what they did to my father, who briefly abandoned my mother and I when I was one year old, to be a part of their church.

I've learned a lesson that sometimes sensitivity is better. But at the same time, I want people to know that religions that have their **** together don't typically shy away from posts the likes of mine above, they have a decent set of apologietics.
