I don't know. Now I'm curious about it, too.
Seems about right. The beam probably looks for changes in light(notice how it 'bounced' in his hands, or rather the shadows they made).

Yeah that's why I said a "dark region" rather than black that he was using to draw.

I didnt say I've seen it before. I said, the thing you linked appears to be what I've described. I've never seen it before either, I'm just deducing what it is.
