Israel-Gaza : Food

Axios:

Driving the news: The amount of aid reaching Gaza fell by half this month, compared to January, according to the UN. That's due to a number of reasons, officials say.
  • Hamas' civilian police who were escorting aid trucks walked off the job earlier this month after being targeted by Israel, creating a security vacuum that opened the door for armed gangs and Palestinians desperate for supplies to attack and loot aid trucks.
  • At the same time, Israeli airstrikes and the fighting in some areas have hit aid workers, making it increasingly difficult for humanitarian groups to continue their operations.
  • Those realities, along with restrictions put in place by Israel, have led to the bottlenecks of aid trucks at the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza and the crossing between Israel and the Strip. The concerns have become increasingly dire in northern Gaza where the World Food Program recently warned "famine is imminent" if nothing changes.
Times of Israel:

... with the following excerpts:

Hamas blamed the IDF for the deaths. The military said most of the casualties were caused by a stampede and being run over by the supply vehicles. Gunmen also opened fire in the area as they looted the supplies.
=====
The army said it did not fire at the crowd rushing the main aid convoy. It acknowledged that troops opened fire on several Gazans who moved toward soldiers and a tank at an IDF checkpoint, endangering soldiers, after they had rushed the last truck in the convoy further south.
=====
The incident began at around 4 a.m., when some 30 trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived at the coast of Gaza City, to deliver food to Palestinians in the Rimal neighborhood.
=====
Thousands of Palestinians rushed the trucks after they passed an IDF checkpoint in central Gaza, leading to a stampede in which dozens of Palestinians were killed and hundreds wounded, some after being run over by the trucks, according to the probe.
=====
Aid groups say it has become nearly impossible to deliver humanitarian assistance in most of Gaza because of the difficulty of coordinating with the Israeli military, ongoing hostilities and the breakdown of public order, with crowds of desperate people overwhelming aid convoys. The UN says a quarter of Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians face starvation; around 80% have fled their homes.

CNN is reporting eyewitness testimony to the effect that the deadly pandemonium was the result - not the cause - of the Israeli gunfire.

And here was me thinking less than 24 hours ago that the 30-plus trucks of aid being delivered into Gaza was a win-win situation. How young and naive I was. "How could this do anything other than help people?" I thought.

I just hope for the sake of the poor in Palestine that air dropping aid alleviates their difficulties. I'm glad smart people are considering how it can best be delivered.

Shooting fish in a barrel.
Food trucks are the barrel.
Palestinians are the fish.
Over 100 civilians killed.
Over 200 injured.
All in "self defense".

FYI: Israel is still sending convoys to northern Gaza. 26 trucks were reported in this morning's daily status report. They are also reporting the increased air-drops of aid in the south from the US and in the north from Jordan.

Here is are a few videos showing the behavior and desperation of the residents of Gaza towards aid distribution during day-light hours prior to IDF involvement.

What I'm reading are conflicting reports. The videos above show what happens lacking any gunfire. If I recall correctly, AP reported the previous managers of the distribution also shot into the crowd.

Regardless, these mobs are dangerous. The drivers of the northern Gaza convoy are IDF. I recall Fallujah in 2004. Taking the IDF drivers as hostages needs to be prevented and warrants deadly use of force. IDF is still sending aid to the area in spite of the danger. No news of any other catastrophes probably means the convoy is better secured.

Yesterday 15 trucks of aid were distributed in northern Gaza. Overall, yesterday, over 4000 tons of food entered Gaza and is awaiting distribution by the UN and relief agencies. 277 trucks of aid were inspected by IDF and staged in Gaza, yet, only 113 were distributed.

General Michael Erik Kurilla, USCENTCOM Commander, visited the region last week and discussed humanitarian aid distribution with Israeli Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, the Chief of the Israeli General Staff, Herzi Halevi, and others on Mar 2nd after the events on Al-Rashid . An additional border crossing close to Gaza City in the north has been approved for re-opening. This is expected to reduce the risk and increase the amount of aid being distributed to those who need it most.
