A big part of the problem here is that quiet acts of charity and inclusiveness don't get covered by the news the way violence and destruction get attention. Basic morality is more common than not, and as a result the horrors get the attention from a media driven by novelty and political agendas.

I can very much relate to this as my synagogue, which is heavily involved within the Jewish Renewal movement, has an affiliation with two churches with one being in the inner-city, and also one mosque. We also are very active within our local ecumenical community in many different projects and areas.
