I am curious as to how you became a Deist. Was it through study of various religious traditions and the common points that are found in many of them?

That had a little to do with it. It was not an overnight process. I have studied world religion for decades, as well as history, astronomy and even archaeology. I love learning about various cultures and lifestyles; past and present.

I am also a critical thinker and I tend to follow logic more than anything. When I first started questioning what I was taught about Christianity (spent 30 years as a Baptist) I felt like I was committing blasphemy. The Church brainwashes people with fear mongering and guilt trips. Once I was able to overcome that, my eyes were opened to the reality of religion...and how man made it really is.

Then I started studying astronomy in depth and thinking on a cosmic scale instead of an earth-centric one. The Bible was written thousands of years ago in a time period that did not have telescopes. They had no clue how vast the universe was or why celestial bodies did what they did (rise and fall of the sun and moon, eclipses, etc.). After looking at the Bible stories and comparing them to similar stories from around the world, it became evident that those stories are just re-branded and retold from campfire to campfire.

I started examining biblical claims and learned some Hebrew and Greek instead of relying on a biased English translation. Once I found out that the Gospels were written by 3rd party, anonymous authors decades after the fact, and they were going out of their way to make the messiah mold fit Jesus, that opened the flood gate for me. I knew what I believed but did not know how to label it. Then, a few years back, I discovered deism and it all came together.
