One of the greatest Jazz standards of all time, right up there with Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five”, is “On Green Dolphin Street”. Being a standard, many, many bands, trios, quartets et all have performed and recorded their version of On Green Dolphin Street, including Miles Davis’ hit version in 1958. Originally, it came out in 1947 and composed by Bronisław Kaper with lyrics by Ned Washington for the movie “Green Dolphin Street” played by Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra – before a Jazz instrumental it actually had verses.

But it was a given for the genre of jazz that was emerging. Often the main tune behind the beat was with piano, but an enthusiast of this haunting standard it seems best with the sax. It lived on for decades, again and again recorded by many artists. It lives today, still.

Below is a version by a group from 1978 – they did this very, very well. It is hard to describe the “tone” of this standard – both haunting and uplifting and full of visions of “downtown”.

I think I first heard it at the “Starry Plough” club in the 1970’s in Berkeley, California – meaning I heard it live. Of course, I probably heard a recording of it prior, either on radio or record. Sometimes it is called “Murder on Green Dolphin Street”.

Last night I awoke with this tune in my mind. I have to rhyme or reason why, but it grabbed me, and I searched Youtube for various versions. I want to share two. One as said by a pretty good band from the 70’s. The other a sound track with verses from the movie.

Enjoy.

Listening to what I'm playing on Rocksmith 2014. I just played ThunderKiss '65, and just unlocked all the "hit all bass techniques" trophy.
