DC Rebirth [spoilers]

So, I see no thread already dedicated to this topic and I would love to talk about it.

Anyone else reading DC Universe Rebirth? Wow. It blew my mind. I love comics of all kinds from different companies. DC is my favorite, though. Batman and Wonder Woman are easily my favorite comic book characters. Honestly, DC has not been as good as Marvel the past few years. It pains me to say it, but I gotta be honest with myself. While there are some things I really loved about the New 52, (Azzarello's run on Wonder Woman being the high point for me, alongside most of what Snyder did on Batman) overall it has been disappointing as it really did attempt to erase so much of DC's rich history. Superman isn't involved with Lois Lane? Stupid. No JSA? Unforgivable. I could go on, and if you are a longtime DC fan, I know you could, too.

Rebirth changes all of that! I read the one shot that kicks it all off and just finished reading the Wonder Woman Rebirth one shot about an hour ago. Fan-freakin'-tastic! Will be back to my shop in the next day or so to pick up the first issue of the new ongoing Wonder Woman along with the Batman one shot and new ongoing series.

Now, if you are wondering, it is NOT a simple reboot. It is something much cooler. Ok, here comes the spoilers! Wally West! Dr. Manhattan! :) :D  I was about to press and on and write a few more paragraphs; but, I will wait and see if anyone here even wants to talk about Rebirth...

The Rebirth premiere issue was a WHOA moment for me. Watchmen being implied as that "other" Wally/Kid Flash felt in his many travels....three Jokers (?)....and the What If meta-questions of rippling through DC's mass media TV/Film entertainment options. I really enjoyed the issue and have in my hands (seriously) Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 ready to read.

I have a special place in my heart for DC that I always felt I grew up with them more so than Marvel. My brothers were more so into Marvel so I guess I had to be the contrarian :D. Marvel I saw as the world of coping with power being internalized/realized. DC I saw as the world of coping with power being forced on you from outside circumstances. Marvel looks up. DC looks down. Both have their philosophy of coping mechanisms. Wonder Woman, Static Shock, Batwoman, JLA, etc...for me represent recognizing more so how the world around us presents conflicts to us that we had no hand in creating, but must cope with and fight against.

That being said, I'm thoroughly intrigued how Dr Manhattan has been screwing with the DC universe for the last ten years.

It is really good. You will enjoy that Wonder Woman. I went back to my shop this afternoon and picked up the #1 Wonder Woman ongoing as well as Batman Rebirth #1 and the ongoing Batman #1. Already read them. :) Pretty excited, especially so about the direction Wonder Woman appears to be going.

Dr. Manhattan as the creator of the New 52 is an inspired move by Johns, in my opinion. Excited to see how this plays out. We know the who, now we have to figure out the why. As for Wally, what can I really say to capture the emotion of him coming back? The scene where Barry asks himself how could he have ever forgotten Wally West made me choke up as I was reading it. Easily the most powerful panel in a comic for me since Wonder Woman breaks free of the Black Lantern ring in Blackest Knight. (Another scene that moves me simply by thinking of it.) Also written by Geoff Johns.

I too have a special place in my heart for DC. I like Marvel, don't get me wrong. I have always been a fan of Thor, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and the She Hulk. But, DC is just special for me. I LOVE Batman. I LOVE Wonder Woman. I love the Spectre. Green Lantern, Superman, the Flash, Cyborg, Nightwing, Blue Beetle, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Batgirl, Supergirl... DC has the best villains in comics. Sure, Marvel has some good ones. The best is Dr. Doom, and he is a great villain. But, for DC I submit the Joker...My greatest experience reading comics have been with DC titles.

Holy crap. I got all verklempt too. That grabbed my heart and yanked it out of my chest.

Well I did read through Wonder Woman's Rebirth Premiere issue and then her Rebirth #1, and pairing those two storylines - her "story keeps changing" - in the past and in the present where she is lost along with her tie to birth itself in the DC Rebirth issue as well, I'm seeing a lot of Diana's journey into self-reflection leading to further examinations of Gods and Goddesses themselves. Her very lasso implied as much I think!

Gotta get Batmans and the Flash's rebirth issues. DC is making some money off me at least for now. :D

I think Rucka is setting us up for a great story. I am excited about seeing Diana's journey with the Cheetah to Paradise Island. Wonder Woman needs this Rebirth as issue 52 of her New 52 series really left a bad taste in my mouth. Azzarello had an amazing run on Wonder Woman New 52, I loved what he did, even some of his changes such as Wonder Woman actually becoming the God of War! It was a solid story that took Wonder Woman into some new territory. After he left, the book lost its magic; but, I continued reading and collecting it. It had a few good moments; but, the ending was TERRIBLE! OK, spoilers for the ending of the New 52 Wonder Woman book... The baby, Zeke, dies!!! Killed by Hera! In other words, Wonder Woman's mission, the one she undertook in Wonder Woman #1 when she met Zola and Zeke, is a failure. Let that sink in. Wonder Woman, strongest woman ever, one of the top five strongest people on earth, period, fails. Not just any failure, she fails in protecting a baby. Ridiculous! The Wonder Woman I know would have punched down into the earth, grabbed Hades, and told him ever so gently that he would be returning Zeke to the world of the living. If you end a Wonder Woman book with a mother sitting in a chair, crying over her dead child, you had no business writing Wonder Woman. You don't get the hope, the optimism, the pure LOVE and compassion that Diana embodies. Sorry, rant over... :)

Me too. I may have to skip a lunch or dinner here and there to make up the slack. Worth it, though!
