Should there be a Jediism section?

Leftimies

Dwelling in the Principle
As a Jedi it would be appreciated to have a forum to discuss the concept; since it is an official religion, seems a shame to miss out on such an interesting belief system. :innocent:

From what I understand, Jediism focuses on the underlying philosophical tones of the 'Jedi philosophy' from the movies - which essentially is a mix of Eastern religions and stereotypes of those religions. There is very little in 'Jediism' that isn't a generalization by Lucas regarding to what Taoists (and perhaps, Buddhists) believe. I am not against Jediism having their own section, but on the other hand, what new will it bring?

Essentially, its a collection of streamlined Dharmic/Taoist beliefs and attitudes realized from a framework of geek culture (mind you, I am fairly nerdy myself so this is not to be an insult), originating from a set of high budget movies. Once again, not bashing on it, but what comes next? The Amarr Religion (based off the overtones of Abrahamic religions) from the Eve Online game has its on 'scriptures' which, although only having few published passages, have enough material to go by. Once again, Eve Online is only a sci-fi online game, but if we go by the logic of Jediism, anyone willing could create a religion out of it.

Would allowing these kinds of 'religions', which essentially spawn out of popular entertainment culture, positively affect this forum or be detrimental to it? I guess if you take them only symbolically, they are not all that bad, but once again why not create your own system entirely? Why franchise your beliefs off a movie or a video game? Practicing independent theology or philosophy is free, after all. It costs you nothing but time.

But again, I am not bashing them really or trying to be condescending. Peace.

Do the people that do this jedi thing actually believe it is all real? Or is it some sort of ironic joke?

I suppose and even though they are a minority, they are more common than one would think. It really isn't JUST Taoism and Buddhism with the Jedi label. They have their own ideas of the force, believe in it, how to use it, believe in the dark side of the force and have certain characteristics, such as loving democracy but distrusting most politicians or making a habit of being fit and practicing martial arts. Really I think it's important for those to believe in something. I don't care what you believe, just believe in it. :)

If people can have UFO religions or controversial ones like Scientology here, I see no reason why Jediism can't have their own. Especially since it can educate those who would at first dismiss it because it comes from Star Wars.

Well if we look at the film, it is clear that the Galactic Senate is a great metaphor for how corruption infiltrates any political movement.....Anyways we should wait until we get our new forum section; happy to discuss all the philosophy, etc. :)

Hi there, does the film count as some sort of Holy Script(ure) for Jedis? I like how you use it here, almost like a parable - it didn't really happen but it gives a great message if you can read the symbols

Yeah, the films, and the books count as scripture. ;)

This is exactly how I feel about Jediism as a religion, but I do think it should have a DIR if we have other niche stuff like "UFO-based religions". Jediism is fairly high-profile and there is at least one licensed Jedi order.

(for the record, I think there are way more interesting pop culture religions but they're a lot less popular)
