The Kindness Box

I was reminded the other day of one of my all time favorite TV shows and the best SF series ever: Babylon 5 which had the following that speaks to kindness. Substitute nationalities for alien races and it works perfectly for us:

The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice.
The language is not Narn, or Human,
or Centauri, or Gaim or Minbari.
It speaks in the language of hope
it speaks in the language of trust
it speaks in the language of strength and
the language of compassion.
It is the language of the heart and
the language of the soul.
But always, it is the same voice.
It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us
and the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born.
It is the small, still voice that says
We are one.
No matter the blood; No matter the skin
No matter the world; No matter the star
We are one.
No matter the pain; No matter the darkness
No matter the loss; No matter the fear
We are one.
Here, gathered together in common cause.
We agree to recognize this singular truth
That we are one
and this singular rule
That we must be kind to one another
Because each voice enriches us and ennobles us
and each voice lost diminishes us.
We are the voice of the Universe
the soul of creation
the fire that will light the way to a better future.
We are one.

We are one.

A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship and he who plants kindness gathers love
- St Basil

If the love within your mind is lost, if you continue to see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education you have, no matter how much material progress is made, only suffering and confusion will ensue. – H.H.Dalai Lama

Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects. – H.H.Dalai Lama

how wonderfull then is loving kindness , it is more valuable that all the things we fooloshly cherish , ...let us then remember to cherish kindness and to pass it on to others when ever we can , ......

[Full quote]

I suppose the thing that I would like to have known or be reassured about is that in the world, what counts more than talent, what counts more than energy or concentration or commitment or anything else, is kindness. And the more in the world you encounter kindness - or cheerfulness which is its kind of amiable uncle or aunt - the more ... just the better the world always is. And all the big words - virtue, justice, truth - are dwarfed by the greatness of kindness
- Stephen Fry ('What I Wish I'd Known When I Was 18')

Life is short and we have never too much time for gladdening the hearts of those who are travelling the dark journey with us. Oh be swift to love, make haste to be kind

Giving is so often thought of in terms of the things we give, but our greatest giving is of our time and kindness, and even comfort for those who need it.
We look on these gifts as unimportant - until we need them

I will be generous with my love today.
I will sprinkle compliments and uplifting words everywhere I go.
I will do this knowing that my words are like seeds and when they fall on fertile soil, a reflection of those seeds will grow into something greater
- Steve Maraboli
