New Horizons spaceraft takes first ever colour photo of Pluto

I thought this was worth sharing. more photos are expected as the spacecraft, New Horizon, gets closer to Pluto and it's Moon, Charon. it's not spectacular, but its brings out my inner child's sense of wonder and makes me long to be about four years old and start running around the house with a model rocket making 'whooshing' sounds. it's just intriguing thing to think that whilst we are going about our lives here on earth, a probe the size of a grand piano is hurtling through the emptiness of space stretching the limits of human knowledge.

“New Horizons is one of the great explorations of our time,” said New Horizons Project Scientist Hal Weaver at APL[University Applied Physics Laboratory]. “There’s so much we don’t know, not just about Pluto, but other worlds like it. We’re not rewriting textbooks with this historic mission – we’ll be writing them from scratch.”

First Pluto-Charon Color Image from New Horizons | NASA

This image of Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, was taken by the Ralph color imager aboard NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft on April 9 and downlinked to Earth the following day. It is the first color image ever made of the Pluto system by a spacecraft on approach. The image is a preliminary reconstruction, which will be refined later by the New Horizons science team. Clearly visible are both Pluto and the Texas-sized Charon. The image was made from a distance of about 71 million miles (115 million kilometers)—roughly the distance from the Sun to Venus. At this distance, neither Pluto nor Charon is well resolved by the color imager, but their distinctly different appearances can be seen. As New Horizons approaches its flyby of Pluto on July 14, it will deliver color images that eventually show surface features as small as a few miles across.

Wasn't it promoted again to something like planet again? Or more accurately, the new category of "dwarf planet." I think I heard...
I have to be honest, I don't really know, but all we do know is there is a lump of rock, or ice floating out there.

It's bigger than a rock... well, of course it depends on what you consider a rock or not. :D

It has four moons (I think) and an atmosphere.

Yes, I wonder why many are so interested in such a thing ?.
It started in the 50s or 60s. The goal was to visit each and every planet in our system at some point. All for scientific purposes. No one really knows what could come out of it, but I believe we have to get out there one day to mine minerals and other things that we need. Also for expansion of the human race into space, at some point.

Yes that sound wonderful, but except for the expansion for the human race, my god, what will that turn out to be, like our own planet ?.

I know, right? We have a lot to figure out if we want to continue to expand out there. Actually, I suspect we might have problems doing it out of political and ideological reasons. There will be nature conservation groups protesting against changes of the climates and such. "Save the 3-spot green frog that's unique in this creek, so no houses here, thank you!" Will expand as well to, "don't ruin the crater here, because it's 4 million years old." So maybe we can't. :/

He, that's funny, but sadly probably true, like I am a human, but I am not really proud to be one, if you know what I mean ?.

I like you, your a nice person.
Thank you. That's very nice of you. :D

Most of the time, yes, I am. But bad temper gets the best out of me at times. It gets better with age though. I think it's because I'm too tired to scream at people when I'm upset. :p

Ha, that's so sweat of you, but yes we all are like that, its just our human nature.

Yes - Dwarf Planet.

They realized last night that's it's actually about 50 miles wider than they originally thought.
That's not enough to bump it back up to Planet status, but it's something.

I'll be at the Observatory tonight catching the live stream of the new images and data so hopefully I'll have some cool things to share with everyone tomorrow.
