Anyone know much about Shaolin Buddhism? I'm looking into it myself, of course, but I'd like to hear what people who know about it might have to say rather than merely reading.
Thanks! Byron

secondly the Kongfu part of shaolin monk life is supposed to keep monks in that temple healthy so the can be well prepared for the journey to enlightenment; the kongfu part is by no means something to entertain the crowd with. I believe that is the original goal of the kongfu pratice famously associated with shaolin temple. Thirdly the shaolin kongfu excercise was started by a famous monk from India (didn't know Indians also practice konfu ) |

Bodhidharma founded Shaolin "Sil lum" kungfu and also Chan "zen" buddhism. He also developed the beginning of Chinese chigong "qigong". Shaolin's practice Chan buddhism, not a specific style of buddhism referred to as "shaolin" buddhism.
There are several Shaolin temples in America now, I'm not sure if there are any around where you live. But the best person to talk to would be a Shaolin monk.

Also, the Indian martial art that Bodhidharma taught the Shaolin monks is called Kalaripayut. So in effect, yes... Indians do practice Kungfu.

Well, I know Shaolin is a sect of Ch'an Buddhism. I have a copy of "The Shaolin Grand Masters' Text: History, Philosophy and Gung Fu of Shaolin Ch'an" (and a few others) and they make that crystal clear right up front. I think these texts may be all I could want to know, but as I said, I'm much more a people person--I like to get info directly from those who know (especially those who write the books) rather than just the books.
Thanks for the replies so far! Byron

The Shoalin Temple practices Cao-dong Cha'n, which Japanese Soto derives from.

What would you like to know I was a monk at Song Shan monastery in Henan for 11 years. I consider all the above posts accurate. Our views and education differ from other Buddhism but we follow the same basic precepts.
