The Zen teacher and writer Steve Hagen said that enlightenment was available to all of us in this present moment. He went one step further to say that all of us were already enlightened...it was just whether we realized this or not.

the Buddha encouraged his followers to let go of their cravings, preferences, and desires in order to become enlightened. and yet had he not fervently desired to become enlightened himself, he would not have had his epiphanies under the bodhi tree and would not have been able to teach the Dharma.
i like the "you are already enlightened" answer, but it can ring hollow and become a catch-all answer. my own practice has been to understand enlightenment not as something one comes to after a long time, but something which reveals itself day by day. one day gives us many opportunities to act with compassion, mindfulness, forgiveness, and responsibility. maybe these things we do right and the fruits of our right effort are themselves tastes of enlightenment...

Enlightenment is an eternal not an external quality to "realize". It unveils the delusions of what we are in this life and what we see and think we know.
It is the falling away of what we thought was reality. I guess it can be obtained at any moment.....the real enlightenment, however, IMHO, is retained for all times.
