I'm surprised that it's taken me so long to find this forum. I hate reading long pretentious autobiographies, so I don’t want to post one either. I’m a preacher’s kid – raised as a 19th century style Presbyterian. Now, I am a financial pledge keeping Episcopalian, a high school English teacher sweating it out in the bowels of East Los Angeles, and a coffee drinking devotee of Hollywood’s quiet side (East Hollywood) where I live and attend book readings and live theater when I’m not correcting essays or logging in grades on-line. Things that I applaud: BBC, carrot cake, Comedy Central, The Geneva Psalter on pipe organ, Evening service in the Episcopal Church, my high school students who actually make it to college. Things that make me smile: Short Fiction, dogs, Liturgical Unitarians (Episcopalians who love the Book of Common Prayer, but have almost no Theology), Social justice advocates who actually believe they can change the world through politics, pop music from the 80s (Funk and New Wave), the gay subculture in LA. Things that I find mildly irritating: Condescending Evangelicals, Bishops, pompous fellow teachers, students who play the “I’m-a-victim” game, gangster rap, credit card companies, winos and crack addicts. Things that bring the taste of bile to the back of my throat: “Christian” patriotism, Los Angeles Unified School Administrators, college age girls with a princess complex, No Child Left Behind Legislation, the utter silliness inherent in the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy, and liars. I think that’s enough to say for introduction.
