Default Do we?

Hi,

Ok, we might not physically laugh, but from what I remember from Religious Education in high school all those years ago (even going as far back as primary school), the general view from anybody actually listening was :-

"they believed in how many gods??!!"

Today, you would find it difficult (I think, at least) to find anybody who didn't see such ancient beliefs as... pretty 'far-fetched'.

I'm just thinking to the future... however far... at people in history lessons looking back at lets say Christianity, with the views :-

"... they believed in a son of God called Je-what?..."

Anyway... education... can someone explain where Pagan(ism?) fits in. For instance... I keep hearing Christmas was actually a Pagan celebration etc.

Not difficult at all. I'm one such person. I'm a Pagan. My beliefs are at least loosely based on a lot of those beliefs (though I tend to see more kinship with the religion of the Norse than that of the Greeks or Egyptians).

There are actually entire groups of people (Reconstructionists) who are dedicated to learning as much about ancient religion in an attempt to rekindle/revive those ancient religions. Druidry, Asatru, and Kemetic Orthodoxy are three such Reconstructionist religions.

As for your question about Paganism, I'd suggest you check out the Paganism subtopic under "Alternate Beliefs." It's two forums down.

First, let me say hello and welcome to the forums. Second, I am a Pagan and I actually practice one of those Ancient Egyptian religion.

Paganism is older than Christianity. A Pagan religion is usually considered any religion other than Christianity, Islam and Judaism, but now the term fits a broader spectrum then that.

And yes, Christians celebrate Christmas as Jesus' Birthday, but it was celebrated by Pagans long before Christianity was formed. For Pagans it's called Midwinter/Yule/Winter Solstice/Alban Arthuan etc..depending on the religion celebrating it. It was later developed into the Christmas we know now by Christians looking to convert Pagans to their religion and attempting to make the transition from one religion to another easier by continuing to celebrate thier Pagan holiday, only changing the name and celebration slightly, to fit Christian beliefs.
