Greetings one and all. Since the new member sticky says to post here post I shall. My name is Greg and I am a recent college grad with my BA in philosophy and minor in euro history. I have moved back to my hometown and gone to work with my dad to help pay off some of the crushing debt that comes from four years at a private out of state college. Lately I have found myself missing the latenight bull sessions that were such a part of my college experience. So I have turned to the net for solace. When I googled religious debate this site was the first one that came up. It looked reasonably well done so I signed up.
As to my religious background I was raised Roman Catholic but fell in with philosophy (my favs are Kant, Hegel, Spinoza, and those contemporary French dudes) in college as a result I have been trained to doubt everything. Needless to say this makes having real faith problamatic. My girlfriend who comes from a fundamentalist christian background often claims I over analyze things and try to hard to poke holes in other people's lives. To some extent she is right and I have been trying to learn tack and subtlty. Many people do not have their basic beliefs brought into question. But I feel that there are too many people who have not devoted enough time to thinking about what they believe and instead simply do whatever their priest/minister tells them to. So I try, when it is appropriate, to test them in their faith, to stretcxh their belief. I think that in the end this is benificial, akin to exercising muscles. In my opinion faith that has never run into doubt runs the risk of being hollow and falling apart when the chips are down. As to my Catholic heritage I am thoughly heterodox. I think that there are many things that need to be changed (ie priest can get married, female priests, ect). But I also enjoy defending the orthodox just for the fun of it. For me debate and argument is not personal. Just like a friendly sparing in the boxing ring is not a fight to the death. Well I think I have rambled enough here and I am ready to jump right into the forums. Hope to see you all there. |

Greetings
Professional heritic aye? Sounds like a good gig (is there a dental plan?). I've always admired heritics--Socrates, The Buddha, Jesus, St Francis...--they seem to have made more of an impact on the world than religious people.

Well I guess calling myself a profesional is a little off base. I am not getting paid. But the moment Fortune 500 companies start hireing I am there. The reason I call myself that is that my gf often wants me to come along with her bible study groups and I feel like it is my job to shake things up a bit.
