Hello and Welcome. So you like Ghost in the Shell. Well you'll have to discuss that with Majikthise someday. Happy posting!

Yup. Ghost in the Shell really makes you think about where the line is drawn between man and machine and what it really means to be human. I wonder if anyone has started a thread on it, perhaps in the philosophy section.
For those of you who never saw the movie, it's a futuristic japanese anime movie starring a cyborg cop, Motoko Kusinagi. The only part of her left that is not synthetic is her brain, and she even begins to doubt that at times since she's never actually seen it. It makes you wonder if anything is physically necessary in order to remain human. If a compuer was powerful enough to replace a brain and you uploaded your mind into it, would you still be human? The Puppetmaster, the hacker that Motoko is investigating, is even more controversial. It turns out that the Puppetmaster is a hacking program that evolved on the net to the point that it became self aware and declaired itself a living entity. It then uploaded itself into a prosthetic body and declared amnesty with the japanese govornment. I don't want to give away too much of the movie. But if a computer can generate it's own ghost and become alive, then what is the signifigance of being human? The question Motoko raised about her own brain may acutally be irrelavent. That's for the Ghost in the Shell movie anyway. The TV series Stand Alone Complex is based on the characters in the movie, except instead of the Puppetmaster we have a new hacker called Laughing Man. |
