The point you make about morals is a perfectly valid one; no one needs to be religious to have a good set of morals. As you say, religious people can be immoral, just as immoral as anyone else. Of course, even though I can see that what you say is fine for you, it isn't the way I see things............"each to his own" ![]()

that lies in the history of a repression, they did not drop their religion by choice ![]() In the late 4th century, the Imperial courts were predominantly Christian; Christianity had relatively few internal quarrels; and a deep conviction that right belief, orthodoxy, was what mattered to God. The Christian emperors closed pagan oracles, temples and end the pagan games by degrees, in a series of increasingly stringent decrees. Finally, the public practice of the Greek religion was made illegal by the Emperor Theodosius I and this was enforced by his successors. The Greek religion, stigmatized as "paganism", the religion of country-folk (pagani) - other scholars suggest the force of paganus was "(mere) civilian" - survived only in rural areas and in forms that were submerged in Christianized rite and ritual, as Europe entered into the Dark Ages. You know, I find this thread very offensive. Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I'm hearing you say that it is impossible to be both intelligent and a believer in a Higher Power. That strikes me as an incredibly arrogant attitude. People (even some very intelligent ones) will continue to believe in God as long as there are people on this earth. I don't see it as having anything at all to do with intelligence.

I didn't know you were a Hindu. Your profile says Vedanta. Is that a sect or division of some sort within the Hindu religion? Thanks in advance for educating me. ![]()

Well, sorry to be offensive. And you are right....intelligence has nothing to do with it.
It is merely the search for understanding, as the way I see it. Of course, I was a bit blunt, so as to see the reaction. Thanks for all the comments. ![]() |
