Wiccan high priest Elwood "Bunky" Bartlett, who won an estimated $49 million in the Maryland lottery last month, intends to use his money to set up a school for witches -- a real-life Hogwarts....
The Raw Story | Wiccan lottery winner plans to open witch school What do you think???

I don't like that at all. It's commercializing a religion (people pay for something that others ("serious" dedicants) can get for free if they really want it), which I don't agree with. Something tells me he's doing that for shock value.

If it is indeed a serious study of Wicca in the same way Catholic schools teach their students religion, then I feel its a much needed aspect of society for his community.

I can't believe the guy actually won.
I remember at another forum he said he would open the school if he won, and I think he said he would give it up if he didn't win. I'll have to check around to make sure.

I think it's a good thing. I know when I was learning natural spirituality, I longed for a school of qualified instructors to help me. But the majority of instructors I found seemed, oh... less than credible.

I'm wondering why he hasn't kept things low key. We've seen how things go when Pagan schools are in the public eye. I'm referring to the debacle of Witch School dot com as an example.
Actually I wish he'd help out or even donate to the efforts of the Cherry Hill Seminary.

I've met Bunky. In fact, the man owes me a Reiki session... He's also made appearances on local radio stations, promoting a Special Olympics fund-raiser known as the Polar Bear Plung. He's a good man, from what little I know of him.
From my understanding, the reason why he's opening a School for Wicca is because it is what he promised the Goddess he would do if he won. He won, so now he's keeping his promise. I don't think he's going for shock value - although the media might be. He seems pretty low key in real life. |
