I'm sorry if this has been asked before....
So I just started being interested in wicca a little less than a year ago and i haven't actually tried a "spell" per se, just meditation and rituals, etc. And since i'm "in the closet" , I have little access to the sorts of materials required for certain spells, like sandalwood or patchuli oil or whatever. And what i'd like to know is... is stuff like that required? Is it absolutely necassary to have a yellow candle when all you have are white? My theort is that it's the thought behind the symbol, but i have no idea. any thoughts? -Kayleigh |

No. None of those things are required, not a thing. All you need is your mind, all of those other things, candles, oils, music, garb etc. is to set the mood and help you focus. They're called tools for a reason

The items for a spell are basically props. They help you focus, and nothing more. Konstantinos calls it a "pyscho drama." All you need to do is channel the energy with your mind, and manipulate the energy to achieve whatever.

if you only have white candles, you only have white candles! if you don't have any candles at all, matches are dirt cheap! (smell nicer too...) i find a lot of my ritual work is paryer with props, props which pormpt my mind to follow certain thoughts or frames of mind needed for what i'm doing. most of my spells are the same layout as my rituals anyway, though there is variation on the content... but that's just because i have one basic layout which i really like and works for me - what works well for me will not work well for others, so i encourage trial and error (error being finding out what doesn't fit well with you). i think i'm rambling, but please ask follow up questions and other questions as they come to you, we're always happy to help if we can ![]() blessed be! mike.

Mike, matches smell nicer than candles?!? Are you trippin'?
Wanderer, like the others said, all that stuff is mostly props to help get you in the proper frame of mind/soul. They are necessary in the sense that some people need a little boost. |

Hi, Kayleigh! I don't think I've welcomed you to the site yet!
I'm afraid I can't help, since I could only answer from a non-Wiccan Pagan's point of view, though you raise an interesting queston. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

i have heard subsitutions can be used, i prefer not too in my workings, necromancy is a bit to dangerous, so i use only what is proven.
