I am new to RF. My purpose for being here is to make friends and to increase my understanding of what is really important to the meaning of life. My belief is that right reasoning and logic are the main tools for understanding what is really real. This being the case, one must be very selective in choosing premises to substantiate his reasoning. For example, theist believe that God is the most basic premise for rational thought. It must follow that to eliminate a belief in God would be to eliminate the most basic reason for reasoning. Does it now follow that a person with the strongest belief in God has the most reliable premise on which to build a quality life and an understandable world view? Or, is this too much of a stretch
to believe that it is possible and necessary to believe that one must believe in God to understand the real meaning to life? |

I don't believe that there is a meaning to life... Just to live, reproduce, and die... and even the middle one is optional... And the life part can be really really short or crappy... Dying is a requirement for sure... It sucks but I think that's all there is to it.

Everything's really real. Easy peasy.

The practice of zen promotes that truth and proper understanding of reality are got from letting go of thinking and quieting the mind of thoughts. They even warn against rationalizing your way to it, so I suppose ideas about reality vary. Who's to determine which one of us has the "strongest belief"? ![]()

I hope it's not too important, because it's flat-out impossible.

God is merely a rest stop in humanity's search for meaning and truth. It's not the destination, but the journey that is important. Less important is what we are doing, more important is how we are doing it. After years of contemplation, what I realised for myself is that only this moment is what matters. Zen and Humanism are my life philosophies.
Hope that helps in some way. ![]()

Yikes! That is indeed a stretch.

What's the difference between something being real and something being really real?
