confused about angels.so i have some rambling questions
did they exist prior to the earth? if so does that mean that God made them? because therefore it seems that if He did then he made another imperfect being (lucifer). and surely angels should be perfect . ?????????????????? if they didnt exist prior to man then where they originally men? i know this thread will probably show my ignorence but it baffles me. |

Righty ho, i'll give you a super short summary.
In Judaism there was originally only one angel the Malach Elohim, essentially G-d manifesting himself on Earth as a sort of ghosty-type bloke. During the exile the Jews acquired the concept of multiple subservient beings from the Zoroastrians, which became the angels in plural - leading to such unforgettable characters as Metatron and Ha-Satan - Satan being the adversary of man, not G-d, his role being the tester of mankind's faithfulness (see the Book of Job). Christianity took up the idea of angels (and Satan) and developed it further, Satan became the Devil by being combined more fully with demonised Canaanite gods such as Ba'al. Various passages from the Christian Bible, but mostly from the last book, The Revelation, led to extra-biblical myths arising about there being a war in heaven, opitimised in Milton's Paradise Lost. Satan, linked with the Roman god of the morning star thanks to some dodgy translating in the Septuagint, and so now under the name Lucifer leads a band of fallen angels in a war against God and gets himself and his mates expelled from heaven creating demons. God did make the angels perfect, and in both Judaism and Islam the angels remained perfect with Satan performing his job correctly in Judaism. In Christianity however, they couldn't comprehend an all-merciful God testing peoples faith through seemingly malicious means, so they created a Lucifer/Satan figure to shift the blame too. In Islam the angels are perfect, the perfect messangers of God who lack free will. Satan in Islam is known as Iblis, and he's not a fallen angel but a Djinn, another type of being unique to Islam who like humans have free will. As far as I'm aware, angels were created before man in both Christianity and Islam. In Judaism as I explained above, it's a bit more complex.

Does everyone who dies become an angel? Or only some people? Or does no one... When I was 7 and my grandfather died, my mom said that he was an angel now... I don't believe that anymore, but I was just wondering what you guys believe about who becomes an angel, and I didn't think I should make a separate thread about it...

Angels were created by God for His Glory and to Praise Him...They were used for protection and to hearld events as the voice of God...as the angel appeared to Mary to tell her of the birth of Jesus also to Joseph. WE are made in the image of God and when we reach Heaven we will be part of the family of God. We are not or ever will be angels...Many people use this term because they feel it somehow softens or makes sorrow easier for people to understand especially to children...The Bible teaches that we entertain angels unaware. Just as the angels first told of the birth of Jesus the Christian world awaits the angel Gabriel and his horn to hearld the return of Jesus....I hope this gives understanding to someone who may really care about the truth.... Thank you and have a blessed day.....from Charity |

Angels were created by God for His Glory and to Praise Him...so why does a perfect being need to be glorified and praised by others. i find that a little narcasisitic, and surley God shouldnt have negative qualities. its not that i am knocking your beliefs, so please dont misunderstand, however i do struggle with the "self indulgent" god of christianity. thankyou for replying. it is always good to hear peoples thoughts and beliefs on subjects |

This a wonderful thread. Howcome nobody thought of starting a thread about Angels before? I remember one about Archangels and fighting before that I replied on, but that's about it...
Anyway, for me, the exoteric conception of Angels that fits most with my own idea of them is the Islamic one. The Angels are unsurpassed in beauty and power, but they have no Freewill. They are incapable of disobeying God. Is it a cool thing to be unable to disobey God? If you're an Angel, I think so definitely, but if you're human...er, probably not a cool thing @ all. For what reason? That'd be worth a whole new thread, methinks... I often think that the reason Angels are portrayed in art as having wings is that in Heaven, you can FLY! Yes, fly. Cool. IN heaven, physics rules are different. Sounds more real than this world to me, but... Well done everyone who replied... |
