It Latin and it means "god out of a machine". Here is something on it: Deus ex machina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first place I heard the term was in War Hammer 40k myself and it was used to refer to the Machine God of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

To me, it is a cheap type of science fiction novel ending. There is a good story, with great characters, a complicated plot, and excellent ideas, and suddenly it is all resolved by the introduction of a machine, which comes from nowhere. Who created it is not explained, nor the why, or a how. It is like saying "God done it, you can all go home, now."

They did that a lot on Star Trek the Next Generation. The crew of the Enterprise is shrinking due to a bombardment of verteron rays, except for Data. Before the whole crew shrinks to a dot, he reverses the phase of the ship's force field with a tachyon emitter and saves the crew. Yay! Cut to commercials.

It depends on how they lead up to it. If the viewer is given clues that this would occur, then it is not so cheap.

The concept makes me think of TV shows like 'McIver' (spelling?), and such. I always felt as though my intelligence was being blatantly insulted.

Or, when I used to watch professional wrestling, as a younger kid.

MacGiver is locked in a maximum security prison for a crime he didn't commit. Unbeknownst to the jailers, the little green rubbery strip that holds the sheets of a writing pad together can be mixed with the ink from a ball point pen to produce a potent time-delayed explosive if raised above the boiling point. He smears it on the cell's light bulb and cries out to his jailors that he can't take the pain anymore and is ready to confess. When they arrive in the cell, the lightbulb blows up and blinds them, MacGiver grabs their keys and promptly escapes. Yay! Cut to commercials.
