To me, "soul" is represents self-identity, while "spirit" represents identity that transcends self to the meaning behind the apparent meaning of the world as it appears to us.

We talk about such things as the "spirit of Christmas," the "spirit of the law", the "spirit of love," or the "spirit of '76" .

Thus, the soul is only "immortal" or "eternal" insomuch as it loses itself in spirit.

Spirit to me is meaning, usually when I refer to it I am describing the emotional meaning that a person attributes to something. It is mostly poetic to me.

Soul is something essential. It isn't necessarily basic, but it exists throughout a person's lifetime and perhaps beyond. It is essence before existence from one viewpoint (and essence after existence from another).

Why are things "full" of soul and not the spirit (spiritful)? Haha, okay, playing with words.

Soul and spirit are so intimately linked it's hard to tell where one begins and the other leaves off. As I understand it, the soul is where causative spirit and brain-mind intermingle and become one. It's like the meeting of salt and fresh water.
