When people have different beliefs as we learned to have after the Reformation, it is necessary for them to learn tolerance and be humane so they can live together in some sort of religious peace and harmony. That is what humanism is and why it has develops in every mature civilization.
Since it is not a Christian concept, it became part of our secular ideological system. In fact, the most widely used term for our belief system is "Secular Humanism."
