From the Tao Te Ching
"The man who is contented with contentment, will always be content". For me, this ^^ sums it up; contentment is a choice that isn't contingent on anything more than deciding to be content. Thoughts?

You'll actually wind up with more because, even if you don't want anything, you're still moving through life and you're bound to run into things here and there. In fact, the less focused you are on aquiring something in particular, the more open you are to all that yummy serendipity.

I always like to think of it as being Pessimistically Optimistic. This concept is prevalent throughout many different religious and philosophical fields of thought. And it is how I try to live every day.

Even this smacks of attachment to outcome though. The contentment I'm talking about is more about settling comfortably into things as they already are.

I can see how it would seem that way. But I feel that is just an argument of semantics. I see it as another chapter in the Tao Te Ching where he says... Why is the ocean the king of all streams? Because it lies lower than they.

It's good to be content, as in able to find contenment in what you have without desire for more making you miserable.
But I also think it's good to not be too content in everything. There are some things with which we should be discontent.

My belief is to be content in all things and to be content with what you have.
Try and make the best in every situation. ![]()
