It was due to the culture that christianity was born into, and spread into. The eastern culture is much different.

Forgive my ignorance, but how does taoism treat/believe in the spirit world. I know the Christianity side of things, having grown up that way. But I don't know about the taoist way.
Is there any books/websites/resources that can readily explain what you mean?

The spirit world is chi for a taoist. And since chi is simply energy, and the spirits are simply energy. Its very accurate. It's when they start talking about chi vampires and talismans and stuff where they get lost.
