Taoists have this saying about sharpening a sword. You see, the sharper the sword, the easier it is to blunt. Ok, I know that sounds kinda wierd but think about it. The smaller the edge gets, the easier it is to make flat. Now granted, the flat edge still seems sharp, but it is indeed flat in comparison to the way it was. Are we like this sword? Do we wish to be the best, the sharpest? And then the tiniest thing blunts us? What do you think?

To continue with the sword analogy...
I think it's how we are 'used' that counts. You spend too much time sharpening a sword and it DOES go blunt easily - especially because you haven't spent any time working on the way the sword is used! There's nothing wrong with a sharp sword - as long as you realize that it's more important that the sword is used correctly and well, and that it's taken care of ![]() On a side note, I have a great respect for swords and similar, non-firearm weapons. ![]() |

That is actually another taoist idea. And it is in the tao teh ching. it says...
Keep on beating and sharpening a sword, and the edge cannot be preserved for long. That means exactly what you are talking about prima. If we use the sword (life) in the wrong ways, then the edge (peace) cannot be attained for long. Wonderful insight!!

Metaphorically speaking, I think the sword is very sharp today.
The stakes are high, and everyone is in competition from a local level to a global level. Athletes take performance enhancing substances, children compete a little too hard in "recreational" sports, parents want their kids to be the best -- take the best SAT prep course, get into the best college, etc... Similarly, as a nation, the US wants to be the strongest -- militarily, economically, etc... WE can have WMD, but YOU can't, because ... I said so. What kind of logic is that? The sword simply grows thinner and thinner, and duller with less effort, and soon, the sword will need to be replaced. Perhaps we can put down our swords, and leave nothing to be lost. Does that make sense? I don't know, I kinda rambled. Oh well... Last edited by sage; 03-28-2005 at 05:02 PM. Reason: typo |
