Came across this.. thought it was interesting.
An English professor wrote on a black board, "A woman without her man is nothing." and asked his students to put the correct punctuation in the sentence. The males in the class wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing." The females in the class wrote: "A woman; without her, man is nothing." I think the latter is more based in reality than the previous.

Both of the sexist interpretations in the OP are irrelevant to those of us who are lucky enough to be gay.

There's nothing sexist about thinking people are lucky to be gay. It goes for gay women as well as gay men.
Frankly, I would suggest that A woman without her man is nothing.has already been punctuated and that it makes sense as it stands. It isn't true, but it doesn't have to be true to be grammatically correct. It's possible to punctuate it differently; the "male" version in the OP leaves the meaning the same, while the "female" version and the one I suggested change the meaning. If the story is true -- which I very much doubt -- it might mean that women are more likely to challenge a sexist statement about women than men are, and to respond with an equally sexist statement about men. Neither statement is true, but heterosexuals seem to feel compelled toward constant sniping at the sex they're attracted to. Gay people are lucky. ![]()
