I'm also studying psychology as an undergraduate student. I believe that there are both advantages and disadvantages with religion. However, I think it is highly unlikely that anyone will find evidence of neuropathology as a function of religious belief. Anyways the disadvantages of religious belief might include a poor concept of self, to view onself in black and white terms (i.e., as either bad or good), which is perpetuated by the stigmatization of sex and other "deviant" tendencies which are natural human predispositions... Not to mention self punishment followed by excessive guilt and shame. Christianity provides a destructive and pessimistic view of the ego, worthy of hellish condemnation. It depicts God as this great punisher, who in the end torments people for an eternity. Did I mention that the Bible is the most genocidal religious text? No doubt that as I learned psychology, I had came to a point where I had to reconcile my poor self-concept and tendency to self-punish, which I attribute partly to incompetent parental upbringing performed within the context of religion. Are you implying religion is needed for hypothetical/philisophical thought and skills?

Absolutely not.But it can certainly be a contributing factor. |

IMO, the only thing religion can contribute to hypothetical or philisophical discussions is of a supernatural nature, which makes any religiously-based hypothetical or philisophical points naturally irrelevant.

Here's a YouTube link to a short clip by Darrel Ray, an organizational psychologist and author of the book "The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture"...
YouTube - The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture He equates religon to a mind virus, claims sex and guilt go together, and can explain how religion works. Has anyone read his book?

Is Religion Hazardous to the Developing Brain?
Much less so than a developed brain is hazardous to religion.
