My rebuttal will be the Dark Ages, science was progressing rather nicely until the Catholic church decided to kill everyone. We lost a lot of time and technology thanks to religion.

Friend smattp,
*religion is the opium of the people* Karl Marx. Yes, for many that is true for some it makes no difference wether there is god or not, for he is not there. So overall there are believers of all types. BUT it is a rare breed who actually do find god and after finding him realises that god is just here alwsys with him but he never recognised him. He was like a shadow and he became afraid of his own shadow sometimes. Well they also say that there is no god or satan too. What you see is both true and false; that is the mystry to be solved. that is an interesting question. i am a theist and i believe only God is God itself. the rest are creatures. but... God has names. each name has a meaning. you can find these meanings in actions of man. because each person is a unique combinations of the names of God. like DNA chain. unique. 4 example, the name Halim means compliant, mild. lack of it would be the exact opposite, maybe rude, harsh. according to my knowledge, one person either has that certain name in action or the reflection of its lack. i don't know if this is related to your question but it reminded me so.

people don't realy need a god but its a patch to keep most things together to have 1 commen thing with people. and it keeps people a bit more honest since they have still some kind of responsibility to god
though if we had never invented a god we probaly never agree on most things it would still be posible to live without him

There is no god, so I would say, no, humans require no god.
Some humans require belief in myths for emotional support.

Human nature seems to include genetically determined patterns or tendencies in how we think about things that are precursors to the concept of god.

Human nature requires answers and religion in one form or another has always supplied them.

In your view, how does the lack of a god necessarily lead to the conclusion that humans do not need one? Just curious.
